DD about to graduate from Leicester. She did a small amount of computing as part of her NatSci degree but I don't know enough about it to comment.

Accommodation is good and comes in a range of price brackets. DD lived in Oadby in the student village in her 1st year. She chose to self cater so had a single room in a flat for 10 people with shared bathrooms and a large kitchen. Everything was pretty well set up for dropping her off for Freshers, although Asda at Oadby was full of bewildered 18 year olds! DD lived in a shared house in her 2nd year. There was plenty of choice and again it was not massively expensive, The landlord was fair and the Letting Agent was quick to respond to niggles. DD moved back to Oadby for a term as she was not able to go abroad for her year abroad until March. Again, the accommodation people were flexible - she was on a weekly contract - and it was only because she was trying to attend lectures in Japan virtually at the same time as her fresher flatmates were stumbling home from the clubs that broke her. She gave notice and came home, then a couple of months later was able to fly out. In her 3rd & masters years she rented an en suite room from SULETS, the lettings agency owned by the uni. They have been fair and reasonable to deal with.

We rocked up to the student village in the Easter holidays of y13 and a very nice lady gave us a 2 hour tour of the different options: catered or self-catered, shared bathrooms or ensuite etc. There is other accommodation closer to the uni but I think it tends to attract more overseas students and is more expensive.

thank you that is helpful re the accommodation. We were hoping for cheap accommodation near campus but that doesnt sound like an option then. Does everyone get buses to campus then for study and back again for social life in evening?

DD was at Leicester (on clearing, so no choice of accomm) - she was in a flat in Oadby which was pretty nice (tho her flatmates were ahem, not her people). It was good value and agree re the handy Asda full of baffled 18yos and their parents on moving day!

The Oadby village has studenty things happening but yes it's into the city for clubs and big nights I guess. Her uni experience was very impacted by Covid (Leicester was in more of a lockdown than most of the UK) so I can't help very much with that. But accommodation in the city was cheap (very cheap compare to some figures I see quoted here for other cities!) and perfectly good - Victorian terrace type.

She did English so I can't help with computing queries - but I would say overall we were impressed with the uni. It was not on our original radar (maybe bc it's not a self-contained campus? it's not RG? I don't know) but they were so helpful during clearing, and her dept in general and especially her amazing PT were so supportive. I mean that might be dept-dependent but tbh I think Leicester is a bit unfairly underrated.

I went to Leicester many years ago and have revisited a couple of times recently. Don’t be put off the distance from uni the Oadby village halls provide a fantastic yr 1 experience it’s leafy and safe can walk to friends. The botanicals garden and sports centre are there. Asda walking distance. The actual university campus is nice. Very affordable accommodation. I’d be happy if mine had chosen there.

In DD's 2nd year she shared a Victorian semi around a 15 minute walk from the campus. It was an ok house and rent was not too expensive. The area was very diverse and a mix of students and "normal" residents. Anyone we met was lovely and friendly.

Leicester doesn't have the best reputation on MN but I think it's a great city. DD loves the market and variety of different restaurants. She has thoroughly enjoyed her time there and would be happy to stay in the area. She graduates on Friday.

Much the same experience as @clary - although my ds had decent choice of accom after clearing - en-suite flat in a flat for 5 in Oadby in year 1 (not his people either but he’s made firm friends on his course) - and year 2 they moved to Nixon just off campus, cheap enough and no real complaints, just a bit basic. Year 3 they’ve picked a student roost flat so he’s avoided the usual student rental houses
