hi all

Has anyone applied for a bursary to help with living costs for a Master's degree please? Helpful tips and advice would be much appreciated. Tricky asking for money without seeming to ask for money!
TIA

without seeming to ask for

but that is precisely what a bursary is

socialdilemmawhattodo · 15/07/2024 16:39

Who do you apply to? I am starting a Masters in Sept and have only seen student loans and scholarships.

Gatekeeper · 15/07/2024 16:39

i know!!! but obvioulsy it can't be as blunt as " i need the money please"

you contact the institution you are interested i.

you ask

“do you have an application process for a bursary for masters?”

and that, OP, is that

bursary/ scholarship

two totally different things

Gatekeeper · 15/07/2024 16:46

ok then..its a scholarship (for some reason the word bursary just stuck in my head) and the process is that you have to write 500 words why you want the money. It just seems so bald to state that due to reduced income a scholarship would be incredibly helpful etc

OP posts:
stillisHQ · 15/07/2024 16:56

so a scholarship is not about why you want the money

it is about what you will offer the university by way of your past significant achievements

stillisHQ · 15/07/2024 16:56

income has zero relevance to scholarships

  • does it not? Application asks How will this scholarship support your aspirations to succeed in your Masters degree? As it's a cash payment then surely the support is a financial one enabling the student to more readily be able to do the Masters?

Do they publish their selection criteria and what they want to know?

I'd definitely mention any widening participation criteria and academic successes. Plus mention personal circumstances eg no parental help as x siblings at university. Have saved for masters but didn't expect such high rental costs etc etc.

? Say how the scholarship would help eg not having to continue term time work. What you'd use it for (if relevant)
? Say something about future career plans.

op
you need to go away and look up the difference between a scholarship and a bursary

you could be Taylor Swift and secure a scholarship

@SandyIrving thank you for helpful response. Application is not for me so I didn't realise the correct term

i never get these “asking for a friend” threads

Apologies I didn't know whether it was for financial need or academic excellence . Ignore my advice as no point banging on about financial need if they just want to know what an excellent student your DC is and their plans for the future.

No offense taken at all. I hope your DC is successful getting some money (regardless of what it is called). My middle one was too late (and not academic enough) for anything for his masters but managed to persuade them to give him the 20% fee discount they were giving to their own graduates (he was switching unis).
