Myocarditis & Deferral ?

DS started Uni last Autumn. He had a tough time (Autism & as he went through Clearing they were not set up for supporting him. He was commuting. He then got a really nasty dose of Covid & lost 4 whole weeks. Upshot was it was decided he would start again this year. They wiped his record. He had no loan.
It dented his confidence a lot. I was delighted he was willing to re-apply to Uni.

He's been very tired all winter which I put down to a bit of depression as he was hanging about rather. But 2 weeks ago he was very ill. Upshot was he was admitted to High Needs Unit at hospital with acute severe Myocarditis & left ventricle heart failure. He was discharged after 5 days. Home now, on heart meds, awaiting results of Cardiac MRI. HCP's say it was a rare unlucky post-viral problem but it's been a huge shock for him & he is still quite worried about it

Reason I'm posting here is current Uni place is 4 hours away by public transport (I don't drive). He needs to sign his room contract on 28th. We are very unlikely to have the MRI results before then (not expecing any problems on this but would like to know is all clear if possible) so won't have had his Cardiac review.

I have called the Hospital & explained, called Uni, called Room providers.
No one can change the timings. Would you suggest to him to Defer?
I appreciate this is our family decision but exH is not interested & I'm rather isolated so I'm using MN as a sounding board.

Is the accommodation owned by the uni or private?

Private. Uni has no accomodation.

I would proceed as if all is going to work out. A friend of mine's son had pericarditis for a prolonged time after getting Covid. It is common among young men (I expect you know this) from teens - early 20s.
He was on medication for a long time and has just been declared clear of it.
Don't let this stop your son. It is likely he can take meds and ask for accommodations if necessary, if fatigued.

@DingleDongBellEnd thanks for such a positive post. He will need his academic accommodations anyway as ASD, Dyslexia (& I suspect AdHD too)

Read the Ts and Cs of the accommodation carefully. Some will let you pull out and just loose your accom - if your contract is like this I’d say just go ahead and sign, as it’s not a huge amount of money to loose and you would have spend it out anyway.
However, for some once you’ve signed you’re eligible for the whole years rent…even if you don’t attend and can’t take up your place. If that’s the case I’d consider deferral if you couldn’t take the financial hit (because you’d have to pay out of pocket as you wouldn’t get student finance) or looking for another accommodation provider with better terms.
