We went to Nottingham Uni yesterday and my son loved it as did we. He wants to study geography and the course looked great but isnt ranked really highly. How did people find Nottingham Uni and specifically geography.

@BeaSure Why do you think it isn’t? Can she not apply for decent jobs? My DD managed it.

My dd has just finished year 2 at Nottingham and she'd be the first to admit that she hasn't been particularly academically-focused so far! And her friends sound similar. These are girls who got all As and A stars at A Level; I think it's perfectly possible to be academically able but not academic, as such, as that's how I'd describe my dd. I'm sure everyone at Nottingham isn't like that, but some unis definitely attract the students who are more into their subject. My sister went to Liverpool, was very into her subject, and found that others around her just weren't. She regretted not going somewhere else. I suspect it's because people who are prioritising nightlife/socialising/sport are more likely to choose Nottingham/Liverpool/Leeds/Newcastle than Oxford/Imperial/Warwick. Makes sense to me! I'm sure there are still plenty of academically-focused students at Nottingham, but maybe they don't make up such a large proportion of the cohort as at Oxford.

If Nottingham are UG-centric in terms of support then I dread to think how bad things are for PGs though! My dd doesn't do Geography so maybe it's better than Psychology!

Thank you for understanding. My DS found that the Nottingham UGs he met said the nightlife was one of their main decisions to choosing Notts.

He found that his friends and colleagues at Oxford did like socialising but also had big big ambitions and "did stuff". Not just running a society but more than that. Being in PPE he met people who were very involved in politics and has worked within the UK sphere but also the global arena.

People had set up X,Y and Z organisation and were motivated to make a change.

At Oxford DS was treated to Nobel Laureates and eminent political figures as guest speakers whilst Nottingham just didn't deliver in the same way.

um - don't want to state the obvious, but work takes up less time at non-Oxbridge because terms are longer! Time for a social life.

Psspsspssssss · 03/07/2024 19:00

OP I don't know anything about Geography at Nottingham specifically but most 'any degree' employers like mine don't care about the minutiae of a specific course's ranking unless it's exceptional, or the opposite.
And Nottingham is a good university, with a well resourced career service.

Don't worry too much about jobs.

Nottingham Uni has over 28,000 undergrads (and Nottingham Trent another 31,500). I very much doubt his "research" , and I use the word in the loosest possible sense, was balanced or vaguely representative.

Didn't PRYZM in Nottingham shut down earlier this year? Presumably we'll now see fewer DCs choosing Nottingham as a result. 🙄

I would have thought the wording 'top sports university' made it pretty clear I was referring to the overall standings rather than in any specific sport

Nottingham is very well-regarded for sport and if we're focusing on perceived prestige, a number of my son's cohort from his selective, sharp-elbowed private school have gone there. For the most academically able, it's probably more of a backup option to Oxbridge, Durham, Warwick and Bristol, but still well thought of.

I did geography at Durham but Nottingham was certainly well respected for geography (and my cousins graduated from Nottingham and went into very well paid careers). But as PPs have said, it doesn't really matter where the course stands in the rankings as far as non-related careers go and Nottingham is good on the cv.

My son plays uni hockey at Durham and the big four are considered Nottingham, Loughborough, Exeter and Durham. His friend who played for the national team received an unconditional offer from Nottingham and they have a very good setup there for sports.

TizerorFizz · 04/07/2024 09:33

Quite honestly. It’s fine for Geography related careers too.

@boys3 Are you going to miss the club? Insider knowledge there! When dd went to uni she had no idea what the clubs were called before she went. I guess if you want a city life, and the variety that brings, you don’t choose High Wycombe or Northampton. I’m sure 28,000 students at Nottingham had all sorts of reasons for choosing it.

boys3 · 04/07/2024 09:38

Not that particular one @TizerorFizz 😄 if I recollect correctly 16 PRYZMs across the country were closed. Some closer to home.

thing47 · 04/07/2024 13:03

@Gajdj Nottingham is a big, busy city more than 5 times the size of Oxford, which boasts world-famous sports and music venues and, yes, a large number of bars and clubs. Is it any surprise that teenagers who want a big-city university experience choose to go there? University isn't all about the academics, particularly at under-graduate level.

Smackerlipsy · 04/07/2024 15:21

DD has BA Geography at Uni of Nottingham as her firm choice and hoping she gets the grades! She also had offers from Exeter, Birmingham, Lancaster and Southampton. We all loved the Geography faculty at Nottingham and the vibe .

It has a good selection of interesting modules and we kind of ignored league tables as DD said it was the one she wanted by a country mile.

Am lolling at the PP comparing it to Oxford which is basically really silly. Of course it’s not Oxbridge! Of course it doesn’t attract the same speakers or have the funding etc, or the supervision etc. Because it’s not Oxbridge? I mean, really???!

Obviously it's not all academics but I'd say the main priority should be the studying?

You go to university to get the degree. Yes have fun, but the main focus is the fact you're undertaking university study.

I've raised my children that work/study comes first. Once you finish that, enjoy, relax have fun. But gotta prioritise studies and work.

RappersNeedChapstick · 08/07/2024 11:53

DC1 has just finished their first year and so far they e loved it and have been doing really well.

They've stayed in Broadgate Park which is literally just across the road from the campus but is cheaper as it's self-catered.

Bigfatsquirrel · 08/07/2024 13:07

Nottingham Geography is in clearing this year - grades reduced to BBB
