Hello to all you on the forum.

Having gone through this all in 2022/23 with my eldest ( just completing year 1 Southampton), I am back again with my daughter - just finishing year 12.

She is looking at Vet med or vet nursing

We have been to several open days: RVC, Chester, Nottingham Trent, Bristol and we have Surrey this Saturday and Nottingham in 2 weeks.

What a stressful process this is even for a second time mum (and expensive on the travel and hotel stays!)

What are you doing with your year 12s so far?

@hornetgirl it will be interesting to see what you think of Hartpury as quite a few kids from here go there at 16. DS would have liked it but they do not do a course for him. He has done some sports training with them and really enjoyed it.

This may be of interest to anyone applying for Maths, perhaps (or with an I terest in the associated topics)?

Are we in the minority to be editing our list having seen the riots ? Hull would have been on there .. now out

RosieMilkJug · 06/08/2024 07:08

Hull Uni is in Cottingham and the popular student bars are not in the city centre itself. I have friends there and I’m going to see them next week (this has been planned for weeks btw) - I can report back if you like. But please don’t have a knee-jerk reaction over the behaviour of some a-holes your DC is unlikely to meet.

doublecappuccino · 06/08/2024 07:09

@RosieMilkJug good advice which I will heed thank you . Yes I think it was just because I was reacting to the news . Would love to hear your comments next week thank you

@hornetgirl

Just one thing, consider whether she would be better doing her vet nursing pt whilst working if she's more a hands on type. My DDs friend studies for her degree pt fully sponsored by her employer, a large private veterinary practice. She just has to commit to working for them for 2 years after graduation.

Sorry. New Scientist events are rather Christmas /major birthday present territory.

Gresham an Oxford are free, though.

DD pressed the send button on Tuesday for her UCAS form. We decided to just go for it as she has known for two years what she wants to do, had got her personal statement sorted and reviewed by her careers advisor and a friend who is careers advisor at a different school, solid work experience, and we've been told at open days that midwifery like early applications as they have a lot of interviews to get through (and some start offering as interviews are completed, rather than waiting until the end). Yikes! Two unis acknowledged receiving the applications but other than that we need to sit tight and hope like crazy to be offered interviews.

Sweetpeasaremadeforbees · 12/09/2024 20:13

Yikes, good luck to your DD. We're still at the open day stage, going back to Lancaster on Saturday for another visit, hopefully minus the torrential rain of last time.

Era · 12/09/2024 23:39

Lancaster is amazing. Good luck for a bright sunny autumnal day. It’s when the campus looks at its best imo.

I can second that! Lancaster is rated in the top 10 in lots of league tables (and has been for many years), great teaching and beautiful and safe campus with a great social life for students.

SoftPillowAllNight · 13/09/2024 13:17

DD wants to do politics & Inter ational relations. We saw a few unis in summer and going around a few now. Trouble is she's not got great predicted grades due to a delayed ADHD diagnosis and the meds are only beginning to work now. I think she's more of an As and Bs student but most unis that need As/Bs will reject her based on current ucas grade. We are new to the whole this - is it best for her to focus on A level prep and apply next year with grades in hand? Is clearing a possibility?

ThePure · 13/09/2024 16:35

We've still got some Open Days planned before a final decision: Birmingham, Leeds and Manchester. I think Loughborough and Sheffield are the front runners for now.

SmileyHappyPeopleInTheSun · 13/09/2024 17:15

We've got 3 open days left which is more than I thought we'd have at this stage but he's already got a clear front runner Sheffield - and isn't that keen on rest already seen - and is now definite about engineering side rather than computer science.

He was speaking to a friend on bus home who had only just started to think about uni at all as college started the UCAS applications process with them..

Changes17 · 13/09/2024 17:33

We've done three open days - Durham, Sheffield and Manchester - and I think Durham is now ahead with Sheffield close behind for physics. I don't think we're now doing any more open days before the UCAS application goes in, in December.

ThePure · 13/09/2024 17:42

Sheffield looks to be popular on Mumsnet!

Maybe it was the free ice cream at the Open Day??

DD liked the clear info on the course and teaching, the halls being in some lovely green parkland with lots going on and generally the vibe of the city.

Stockpot · 13/09/2024 17:46

I thought Sheffield looked fantastic. DD wants to study engineering. She is quite keen on Bath and Bristol as well.

I took my daughter to an open day at Sheffield a few years ago I didn't see any free ice-cream but I loved the library.

Changes17 · 13/09/2024 18:05

Also missed the free ice cream! Liked the city, though. Nice and walkable.

olivo · 13/09/2024 18:45

Hi, I'll join you if I may. DC did A levels this summer and is taking a gap year, applying for Sept 2025 though no decisions or choices as yet. Tricky without school to encourage/ check but hopefully, they'll be ok. Also, unable to make it to open days or do visits so it could be interesting!

SmileyHappyPeopleInTheSun · 13/09/2024 18:54

@ThePure apparently it their the cleanroom and just how approachable the whole department felt to him on open day* *but the city is also nice.

He just wasn't as keen on Bath though he also knows due to DD1 GF it's more expensive than DD1 University campus though GF is really enjoying her time there.

Monstermunchy · 13/09/2024 19:20

Sheffield is my son’s top choice currently too!
