Remark on final module - University

DS just had his final mark on L6 module and the feedback completely dismisses any work he has done. Not one thing noted to be good.

He worked as a group and the other two people have been scored considerably more. One of them missed things out. To say he is devastated for all the hard work and months of slog is an understatement.

Any advice on if it can be remarked as his papers to have been marked by someone new to the university and the other two marked by the course lecturer.

This will also affect his overall degree classification as it's weighted 1/3 for L5 & 2/3 for L6.

It's the mark in January that's was deducted 10 marks for late submission due to deteriorating health in between EC given a submission date not this final one in June. This is the one we will appeal (as per PT) however, he said he knows nothing as it's an admin thing.

DS reached out to admin for procedure and as per some comments earlier he should appeal so that's the plan. The extra 10 marks would jump him up into the next grade boundary. From
2:2 to 2:1 so it's important to try.

Just wondered if an admin staff could advise.

Yes as an academic I'm not involved in the appeals process at all so I would be definitely be steering any students towards my professional services colleagues who can provide the relevant forms/process information (I don't even know what tbh, but they would!) and the Union for advice on how best to approach the appeal.

poetryandwine · 07/07/2024 21:01

I am not admin either, OP. But the more important point is that each university will be slightly different.

I'm so sad that he's battled a shitty illness and had virtually no support that comes with DSA status.

My friends child is in another uni and been offered uncapped re submissions are well as 2 week extensions.

What supports does the uni promise to students with DSA status? Unkept promises that affected DS’ marks may (or may not) comprise further grounds for appeal. If the SU cannot help with this, or even if they can, I would get an opinion from someone in the DSA office

I work in exams, appeals and classifications on a daily basis in an admin role. At my institution we would remove the element(s) of the module concerned (ie: the bit which he submitted late as he was hospitalised) and then reweight the module. It might be the case that we'd also discount the module overall, but it's difficult to say without full info (and you're right not to give it) ... But again, this is specific to my department at my university so he should speak to the exams team (or similar) to see what action they could take, as I personally think deducting 10 marks for a late submission with valid MCs is harsh but then we clearly have a different policy so it's very hard to say.

As others have said focus on this aspect not on "I think I should have done better" - students can't challenge academic judgement and it will likely have been reviewed by at least one other internal plus an external examiner. However, all marks (again, at my uni) are provisional until the Board of Examiners. Has he had his official degree result yet?

Yes, it arrived late Friday and graduation later this week which he has already said he would do the later one.

Search for that uni's academic regulations - they will be on their website and should have details of the appeals procedure.
It might be called something like Academic Appeals Procedure.
Sometimes it's easier to find things by putting Uni X appeal marks (or similar) into Google rather than the university website search portal - they're not always very easy to find things on.
Time might be a factor so don't delay too long.
At the same time your DS should contact the SU and the uni's disability support department.

examadmin · 07/07/2024 21:30

We wouldn't award an extra 10 marks. The marks don't change. But the mit circs from Jan would be looked at in the final board if they were unspent (ie: he hadn't already benefited from them) and this could impact the overall classification awarded.

I should also point out that reasonable adjustments are meant to put the candidates on the same level as the other students, not to give someone an advantage/benefit because they have them. I say this because you/he need to get your language clear on this before talking to anyone.

Yes, it arrived late Friday and graduation later this week which he has already said he would do the later one.

Ok. He might still be able to submit post board mit circs (which is likely his best chance) and this will trigger another exam board... But again, he/you needs to find out the exact rules in the specific department at the specific university, and be quick with getting the email in as there's usually a 5-10 day time limit. If it were me on the receiving end then I'd be on to it pronto (after discussing things with various internal people etc) as no one really wants an official appeal form because they're SO time consuming for everyone involved, but then from what you've said we definitely have a different policy which is again why you/he need to go directly to the uni at this point and it may be down the formal appeal route.

ohmydays37 · 07/07/2024 21:49

@examadmin it's five working days to appeal so we still have some time.

Just trying to start in timeline from the original request to DS calling and begging for extra days due to health getting worse. They actually said submit another extension and would consider it - asked for hospital info which I managed to get lab report and details letter from specialist nurse to then say.

'It's morning your best interest to have more time',, literally 2 hours before the last submission before he would have failed. At this point he handed in and got the 10 points late submission deduction which now would jump him up to next classification.

You need to align this with what’s appealsble, OP. The SU and the Disabilities Officers know the university regulations and are therefore best placed to help you. With the best will in the world, we could lead you astray
