Those of you who have lived vicariously through the IB for the last 2 years, how are you feeling? I just realised today that it is one month to go! Have to say that on top of the normal levels of stress I’m pretty worried about the impact of the leaks that I’ve heard about?

It is a tough course but I imagine if that’s all the school teach then they are well set up for it and if all the pupils are doing it then they can’t compare themselves to the A level students doing less work ( apparently !) Are the results at the school good ? Why are you worried about it ?

@newmummy100 yes we would do it again and in fact we are about to do so! DS finished this summer (and got the results for his first choice uni) and DD will be starting next month. She is an all rounder and a hard worker so I think she'll be well suited to the IB.

Hello, I've just found this thread after the 2 year roller coaster of parenting an IB student. My dd has got into her uni of choice but has not had her place confirmed. I was wondering if this was the same for others? I'm trying to stay out of interfering but dd is away and I said I'd investigate.

There does seem to be a problem with UCAS updating universities with IB results.

KazzaV · 10/08/2024 15:11

My DD’s UCAS was updated in the week after the results

@newmummy100 the IB is not for the faint hearted. My eldest did AL albeit during the pandemic and the second one IB and the IB was way more intense and hard work. I am still suffering from "PTSD" as a result so don't have the bandwidth to say much more but pick your subjects strategically and choose ones you are likely to score highly in as your HL

newmummy100 · 10/08/2024 18:30

Thank you for all the real life experiences of IB. 😀The PTSD did make me laugh. Glad you got through it.

Is there certain subjects at Higher which are just ‘oh my!’ and where A level would have been a better/safer choice? DD thinking of taking Higher in Maths AA, Physics and Latin. Lower would be English Lit, ESS and Geography. If she were to do A level she would pick Maths/Further Maths, Physics and Latin.

MapleTreeValley · 10/08/2024 21:05

No, I don't think that particular subjects are difficult. I mean, HL maths AA is hard (my DS did it) but not harder than further maths A level. It's just doing so many different subjects (plus the extended essay, ToK etc) that makes it challenging.

Doublethecuddles · 10/08/2024 21:31

My DD did geography and EES where there is a bit of an overlap. There is a lot of coursework along with extended essays and TOK which is challenging. DD did very little else in the last 2 years. The exam timetable is very intense, it’s all over within 3 weeks.
It often gives them an advantage at university in the first year, as students have covered a lot of the coursework.
We are in Scotland and not all universities understand the IB when it comes to offers and the grade required at IB is much higher than at Scottish higher.
