Anyone's kid yet to pull the trigger?

My DD said about three weeks ago that she'll go to Durham (she has an unconditional offer so once she says yes it's a done deal). I said great! Ready to press the button? Oh no - not yet.
Last night I said it would be June tomorrow so.... and she said yes even her old school (she left it a year ago) sent her an email reminding her about it.
Im not sure what her hesitation is! It's not her first or second choice (that was Cambridge and then LSE but neither offered). She was happy enough with Durham during the offer holder day and (so far) has been allocated her first choice college. A bit of a wobble about her course and she may ask to add another subject to make it joint honours but will stick to her original plan if they say no. She's mentioned things she wants for her room (a map, a globe etc). I've even booked a hotel for moving in weekend!
Anyone else have a child reluctant to make that final commitment? Is it because it's the point of no return?

Yes, I have two here being reluctant to make a final decision, one is a bit unsure of his firm choice and the other his insurance. They also had some rejections including Oxbridge which has made their decision more difficult. They have promised to do it tomorrow at the latest, I don't want them leaving it till the very last day!

Mine did this last year. Took it all the way to the deadline to select. Then all summer the uncertainty continued about the chosen option. She announced the day before freshers week she wasn’t going. On hindsight I think the early indecision was indicative. It’s taken a year out to navigate to a course and uni that she is happy with.

@FebuarySmith this is part of my fear. She was going to do a completely different degree (Animation) for years. Then she did more research and investigated actual job opportunities, did a short course at UAL. Talked to the teacher and got in to an Art Foundation year (not essential but often done before going to art university). Anyway when she got her results she decided a creative career was not stable enough. So all changed and she decided to go for an academic degree and fell hook line and sinker for Cambridge. She knew the odds, but was hopeful. Then after that (devastating) disappointment decided she wanted to live at home and not get a maintenance loan so LSE was her target. They took a heck of a long time to turn her down (even though looking at that new UCAS tool she has higher grades than the highest they mention).
She has mentioned taking another year out and applying to different unis, but then has said she definitely wants to go this year. Then said about changing the course slightly.
Frustrating. Even if she confirmed she still has time to change her mind (clearing for example). I don't know. I listen, but don't think I can offer her any more advice.

Finally confirmed Durham. Now says it was 'obvious' that's where she was going to go! Now await SFE (haven't heard anything since applying several weeks ago) and accommodation email!

Hooray @mondaytosunday
Good news.
And obvious (now) 😉

Hope she loves it. It's always better when you've got a plan.

Maggiethecat · 03/06/2024 12:37

Same boat here! And for Durham too. Just had an email from UCAS reminding of the deadline.
They’ve had to resort to contacting the parent!

Maggiethecat · 03/06/2024 13:41

Sorry, the school, not UCAS

WarBaby · 03/06/2024 14:27

Hope she's happy with her choice OP. Once she gets there, more than likely she'll love it. Unless there is an element of nagging doubt that perhaps animation was her thing after all?

My DC only firmed this morning. Again, it was an unconditional offer which I think is scarier to firm as that's it - choice made. At least when you have a conditional offer there is still an element of hedging your bets between two, and fate deals the final card.

Aaaah I’m sure she’ll love Durham! Just to give you the heads up you won’t hear anything about accommodation until colleges are confirmed in August.

mondaytosunday · 03/06/2024 17:32

Thanks all! @KittyMcKitty I'm sure something - possibly the 'welcome to St John's' email - said June for questionnaire about preferences, though I've also seen it as August! I've said it before - they need ALL the info in one place not buried in various different pages!
Relieved it's done now (still debating when to ask about the CHSS).

Ah that would be good if it’s June. Dd had nothing from Chads till after it was confirmed (which in her case was 2 weeks after results day) - it was a looooooong wait!

DownWithThisKindOfThing · 03/06/2024 22:17

Mine just did his on Saturday

FebuarySmith · 03/06/2024 22:47

Good for her @mondaytosunday, Durham seems great.
