Hi , I know this question has been mentioned so I do apologise
my dd is starting uni this sept and all her jabs from when she was younger are up to date & were done at school
I’m now thinking about the Men B privately there’s no price on health . How long does this jab last?
Her MMR was done as a baby do these need to be done ?

Men B isn't on the list of childhood vaccinations and should be done before uni, yes. You can get it done at Boots.

My daughter's uni had a couple of hospitalisations with it just before Christmas and all students were advised to get the vaccination.

It's a 2 dose jab, done over a couple of weeks.

dementedpixie · 24/05/2024 18:24

@Duchess87 your dd should have had 2 doses of mmr. One at 1 year and the other around 3y 4m

dementedpixie · 24/05/2024 18:32

Neither of my children had the MenB vaccine as it was brought in when they were a bit older. They had the Men ACWY at school.

I'm not paying for the MenB vaccine. It's about £100 per dose with multiple doses required.

Duchess87 · 24/05/2024 18:47

My dd was born in 2006 , I’m just looking through her red book which is up to date and I can’t see any men B jabs so maybe it came out later
The Men B jab is very expensive and should really be given routinely to teens starting uni

I’m going to the Dr’s next week to ask for her list of jabs

MenB came out in 2015 for babies only. My kids were born 2003 and 2006 so they didn't get them

LetMeJustCheckMyCitrusPocket · 24/05/2024 18:53

I'll definitely be getting it for my DS as although he had all his childhood vaccinations, the MenB wasn't part of the schedule then. A friend's son ended up very ill in intensive care after contracting it whilst at uni. You never think these things will happen to you or yours, that brought it home that it really can.

Duchess87 · 24/05/2024 19:05

I’ve just booked an appointment for the Men B
my dd had her MenACWY in 2020 at school does this last for 5 years ?

OP posts:
dementedpixie · 24/05/2024 19:13

Nhs seems to say only 1 dose required and that boosters may be needed every 5 years if your type of job requires it

HeyDudeDontLeanOnMeMan · 24/05/2024 20:26

My ds was part of the trials for MenB (born 2008). All his jabs got done at home as part of the programme which was handy! I got dd done privately later to even them up.

Duchess87 · 24/05/2024 20:27

Does anyone know how long the Men B lasts in teens please ?

I imagine 5 years as that's when the suggested booster period is if required for working

dementedpixie · 24/05/2024 20:36

From the superdrug website

Boosters: Boosters aren’t currently recommended. However, you can get a booster five years after your last jab if you need it for a meningitis ACWY certificate.

dementedpixie · 24/05/2024 20:39

From another pharmacy website

How long does the meningitis ACWY vaccine last?
The vaccine reaches full efficacy around 2 days after you've had the injection and provides protection for 5 years.

Fatotter · 24/05/2024 20:40

Men B, Hep B and HPV (just missed the cohort for boys) privately for my DC Boots and Superdrug. Really good service.

Prices are all online.

papadontpreach2me · 24/05/2024 20:46

I paid to have ds vaccinated when he was younger because it wasn't part of the vaccination programme. We went to a private GP.

NotDonna · 25/05/2024 16:57

DD2 born 2005 had the usual childhood vaccines at school & we decided to vaccinate against MenB at Boots last year prior to uni. It was 2 doses and I believe lasts a lot longer than 5 years but even if only 5 years it gets them beyond the risky teen age. Babies are at a higher risk hence the introduction of MenB for babies since ours born. It was around £100 per dose so £200 all in. Not cheap but wasn’t willing to take that risk. I’m very pro vaccine though!!

So my teens (in the US) just had the MenB shots this February at the insistence of doctor who's friend works in an A&E and has seen practically an epidemic of teens / early 20s with it. My DH has a colleague whose son died of it in the UK last year. I think its important. But I understand the vaccine lasts 1-2 yrs tops.

If they aren't in a context with close contact with lots of people in the same risk factor age bracket, then it's probably not as important.

The riskiest age groups for contracting it are very young children and older teens/young adults. That's why universities strongly urge students to get it.

dementedpixie · 26/05/2024 12:07

I dont think Universities do encourage MenB vaccine. They advise the free vaccines and those are MenACWY, MMR and HPV.

My dd has had the above vaccines and ds has had MenACWY and MMR as he wasn't in the male cohort that got HPV.

Yes they do. And so do the NHS.
And when there are outbreaks like last year, students are contacted individually if their medical records don't show it as having been done, and strongly advised to do it.

85% of all cases in 2022 were in university students.

A low (but rising constantly) total number, but obviously no parent wants their child to be part of that number.

dementedpixie · 26/05/2024 13:57

I see nothing about advising the menB jab, probably because a lot of that cohort isn't eligible to get it free on the nhs. They mention ACWY, MMR and HPV as you can get them without paying
