Has anyone of here gone through the experience with quitting nursing? I'm fed up and can't do it anymore.

How far through the course are you?

flyinghen · 05/05/2024 16:50

I quit half way through a midwifery course. I don't regret it but I do feel sad about it.

I've completed one assignment and placement for the final year. Still have a lot to do and finding it very overwhelming xx

I would say keep going and get the degree. Even if you don’t pick nursing as a career at lesst you’ll have a BSc. And make good use of your student services for extensions a guidance. I am a nurse if I can help answer any of your questions? I am a military nurse so don’t work for NHS, and completed my degree 3 years ago

Dreemhouse · 05/05/2024 20:42

I felt like this at the start of the year. I’m now only a few weeks away from qualifying (AHP not nursing). As PP had said, even if you don’t want to be a nurse at the end of this you will have the qualification to show your 3+ years or hard work. I’m not sure if you get the NHS learning support fund in nursing but if you do, just bear in mind you would need to repay that if you don’t finish.

Having said that, I do really sympathise because I felt like I couldn’t go on at the beginning of the year. It’s a slog but if you’re in your final year, there’s not long to go.

What are you aiming to do instead? Given you are final yr I’d try to finish if you can - see what adjustments can be made if you are struggling with the work.
You’ll be better placed with a degree if you can get over finish line.

I have a law degree and took the masters route which is really tough and not supported as much as the BSc xx

Are you aiming for clinical negligence type work or wanting a complete change from law. You’d be in demand with a law degree plus nursing masters.

You are so close to finishing! Trust me, you will regret it if you don’t finish. Having an MSc on your CV will open doors for you in other career options. Keep going! If you are burnt out take a day off and treat yourself, spa day or something to recharge your batteries.

I do so want to finish the degree I just feel so burned out at the moment. I do have the option to go back in September to finish, but just makes me sad not graduating with my cohort xxx

Don’t give up, it’s really worth it in the end. The School of Nursing will have counsellors, do go and speak to them.

JennieTheZebra · 05/05/2024 22:53

I’m a MH nurse. Are you struggling with anything in particular? Tbh the degree is hard and it’s a long slog to the end, but you’re nearly there.

allthemiddlechildrenoftheworld · 05/05/2024 22:55

@Cats345 no no no!! you are nearly at the finish line! if you jump ship now then all the struggling will have been for nothing!!

kerstina · 06/05/2024 08:13

Much better to take the time off and restart September than quit altogether? Have you got any holiday coming up? Have you seen your GP?

WeakAsIAm · 06/05/2024 08:20

15 years qualified as an NHS nurse. I get it I really do at this point most feel it or have felt the same.
But please dig deep as a previous poster said even if you decide nursing is not for you just finish your degree/masters or all the stress and work you've done up to now is wasted.
It's a perfectly normal and natural place to be right now, get some help. I think you will regret not finishing in time to come.

sashh · 06/05/2024 09:02

Finish if you can. Even if you have a break and go back in September.

Have you considered teaching? I spent a few years of supply doing mainly the anatomy and physiology unit of BTEC to 16 - adults. Mainly in FE colleges which I prefer to schools.

I have not taught for a few years but I still get calls and emails because there are so few people confident enough to teach it.
