So they are a classical player? What is their academic profile?

Depending on academic grades then I would start by looking at the following:

Birmingham
Manchester
Southampton
Durham
Huddersfield
York
KCL
Queen Mary
Leeds
Royal Holloway
Nottingham
Sheffield
Surrey
Cardiff
Bangor

If the candidate is likely to get good A levels then Oxford is worth considering - DS2 is doing music there and while the course is fairly traditional in some respects, he gets a wide range of course choices and is enjoying it. (The technology element might be a bit limited though)
If he's more interested in performance then one of the conservatoires might be worth looking at. I think some do have composition as a primary for undergrad?

Yes classical
grade 5/ theory with distinction and Grade 8 with merit, actually thinking of mainly studying music but will study business as well, do u think Southampton is a good to choose

Yes, Southampton is a good choice for music and their courses are fairly flexible. You can combine Music with Business Management.

Comefromaway · 03/05/2024 11:05

Liverpool is a another university who offer a joint Music & Business degree.

EDIT - Scrap that , that particular combo is not offered.

LIZS · 03/05/2024 11:12

There are specific music colleges and conservatoires offering degree courses. However not sure you would find those results to be exceptional amongst music students. Some unis offer music scholarships, even where Music is not the main degree subject.

Some universities have different types of courses eg leaning towards different areas so look at the prospectus carefully.

I recommend Cardiff for classical

Southampton would be a good choice. There are lots of performances at the Turner Sims concert hall (on campus), as well as a wide range of ensembles. As someone else said, it's possible to combine music and business.

Thx mitogoshi

Quite a few lawyers do a music degree first (surprisingly). If that kind of thing might be considered they go for the hardest to get into courses eg Oxford.

My children's father did music and is an organist and teacher (he did PGCE after the BMus and has the FRCO (for organists).

Good luck to the applicant here. I did loads of music at university and it is still a huge part of my life but my degree was a law degree and I kept music as a hobby (for financial reasons! Lawyers tend to earn more)

Might be worth looking at Music with Enterprise at Leeds, Music with Innovation at Bristol Business and Management at Glasgow or the 4 year course at Surrey that includes a year's industry placement?
