Radiography

Hello,
My son (year 12) is interested in a career in radiography.
Does anyone have any suggestions for good books to read to help with his UCAS application or any tips please?
Most of the books I have found are text books for radiography students, which are possibly not what we’re after.
Thank you!

My duaghter is currently interested in this. Shes working through "careers you could do with science A levels! "

She's ruled out medicine and dentistry as surgery or anything inside wouldnt be for her, also the long training (low income fmaiky).

She's predicted good grades though but Is a bit overwhelmed by the need to choose a career at 17 and then you're in it!

She's also interested in potential income as it looks like some career routes in general won't progress so well. Is there progression with radiography?

Do you interpret what you see?

Are uni courses very similar?

Also I think I've just seen there's a bursary??? (Shouldn't influence her but probably would.)

I personally think she'd be better on a career without tons of patient contact but she's a teenager and not thinking "nice work from home with flexitime would be good..."

No need to apologise. I’ll be interested to hear any responses. Good luck to your daughter!

Update - she was offered a place two days later.

There is a £6k NHS bursary.

My daughter is looking into radiography too. She’s year 10 so not that close yet but what a levels do you need? She’s happy with biology but doesn’t really want to do another science or maths. I think she probably would need to do it may put her off. Also, are students able to work in term time? I’m guessing not? Do they still get the long uni holidays or are they generally on placements etc? Thanks

The best thing to do is to look at the entry requirements on some university websites. DD was worried that she would struggle with physics as she only has a GCSE in it, but she is really enjoying it because it is relevant. I would also go to a few university open days.

DD has a degree in biomedical sciences so she is finding some of the topics easier than others.

Hi, I am not a radiographer but teach another healthcare professional. We look for students with an understanding of what the role involves, which others have covered here. I’d also recommend being aware of the professional governing body framework - but I’m not sure what that is for radiographers - maybe HCPC? this clarifies professional expectations and the scope of the role.

Does anyone know what type of question la they would ask at the interview? My DD is interested in diagnostic radiography

RampantIvy · 25/04/2025 07:25

They need to know the 6 core values of the NHS.

DD and her friends are astonished at how some people managed to get through the interview for their course. It's pretty evident that some of them are really struggling with the content.
