Has anyone ever failed a nursing degree on here?
Just wondering what my options may be if I don't pass?

Nursing is a highly skilled professional job. It's not a fucking vocation. After 37 years in the profession it is soul destroying to hear it so described.

As it happens, I find supporting and encouraging students who are struggling with academic writing more rewarding than criticising them. It help keep the good ones in the profession.

Comments from the likes of @Ritasueandbobtoo9 is the reason I'm absolutely terrified to qualify. It seems that people's personal lives are never taking into consideration and are just pushed to the side. No wonder people quit nursing or leave after qualifying with support like that🙄

The thing with nursing is that it's so broad, there really is something for everyone. That's not to say it's not hard and soul destroying at times, but it can also be the most rewarding, fascinating job.

My own career has included leading critical care teams, working closely with families in the community providing care at end of life, senior management and now I have a brilliant role encompassing frontline care and teaching. Just this week I attended a study day and was blown away by what I learned.

Don't be put off by a bad day or a bad experience. There will be a niche for you if you want it. My top tip would be to find a good team. Some of the nicest places I've ever worked have been in hospices. Although palliative care is hard, the staff usually support each other and so the teams tend to have higher levels of work satisfaction.

Do what you need to do to get through the academic side. Once qualified, you will have so many options. Good luck

@tchotchke Nursing is a vocation. Taking a place on a course, working with professionals during placement, doing the academic work needed to pass leads to being able to care for people safely. I’m just being honest. Who do you want caring for your critically ill relative?

As an Advanced Nurse Practitioner, I am fully aware that nursing is much more than just a vocation. I would want someone who is qualified, knowledgable, passionate, supportive and caring.

Don’t take any notice of that snarky reply. There are arseholes in every job in every walk of life. You will soon learn how to avoid them 😂 as a nurse of 15 years I promise there are lots of lovely supportive managers and colleagues and you just have to find them.

But this is the reality.

We have all missed birthdays, Christmases, weddings, school nativities and even funerals.

If every single nurses personal circumstance was taken into account, every shift request honoured, every flexible working request granted - who would be left on the wards?

It is a tough, tough business to be in. Not one I’d choose now and not one I’d want my DC to enter.
