Sheffield or Glasgow for politics and IR?

DS can't decide between the two, any views would be welcome! He has unconditional offers from both (grades in hand) and dismissed other options that are at a campus university. He started at another uni last autumn but dropped out at Christmas and wants to get it right this time.

I’ve just looked on Rightmove. Saw a couple at £225 in Walkley. But they’ll go way over the price, they always do. Sheffield advertises below the asking prices.

You can get a perfectly decent Victorian house with 3 beds for under £250,000 in a good enough area. £1/2 million is not necessary. What 22 year olds can afford that? Meersbrook and Heely, Nether Edge are all possible at £1/4 million.

Which kind of areas are you counting as 'good enough' areas?

Longma · 07/04/2024 18:30

Ah sorry - see you posted some. Nether Edge varies a lot - some parts are lovely, other parts can be a little more edgy iirr.

It’s really a bit off topic but staying in Sheffield post graduating is doable if you compromise. However being on your own and buying a house does mean a very high starting salary and that’s unlikely. If you are a couple it’s very doable. Yes, areas vary but these properties would be significantly more in the SE so it appears DC like to stay in Sheffield and will be able to buy. Whether grads can all afford £1/2 million in a few years is a moot point! You can get started though. Areas of London might be a bit iffy but sky high prices though!

Crooked is doable, 3 bed terrace for 250

Bluepetergarden · 07/04/2024 20:48

Crookes even !

TizerorFizz · 07/04/2024 22:34

Yes of course. I think dc doing these types of degrees need to take living costs post graduating into account. You can certainly have a better standard of living by working up the employment ladder in a city with cheaper housing than other cities.

So where do Tory politics students go? Assuming there is such a thing...

They do PPE at Oxford.

Piggywaspushed · 08/04/2024 07:25

Yes red, already had tat discussion upthread...Easter Smile

TizerorFizz · 08/04/2024 14:02

@RedHelenB Obviously they cannot all do PPE at Oxford! Thats impossible. What they might hopefully do are other degrees and run companies. If every politician did politics degrees, God help us!!
