Anyone else still waiting on this? DC has booked for the STAT test next month but is starting to feel a little disenchanted after applying back in October.

Yes! My DS has an Imperial offer and just waiting to do the test and hear from UCL before firming it. He wants to be in London is will put UCL as his insurance if he does not make the STEP requirement.

CoffeeMugShot · 28/03/2024 11:17

Good luck to your DS @PandaPacer

Is he also feeling a bit blindsided by what the test actually involves? There seems to be really limited info available about it

Bumping - just curious to hear if anyone knows of any offers coming out!

The timing of the whole business is bizarre, especially with UCL having switched to first come first served accom and opened it in March

CoffeeMugShot · 11/04/2024 09:15

Yes, the whole thing is odd. The timing is annoying re accommodation - DC will take UCL if offered, but budget is a real worry for us and I’m concerned that the “cheaper” options will be gone.

plus the STAT itself was deeply weird, and the fact it’s so expensive doesn’t seem very includive

i I wonder what their thinking is really!

CoffeeMugShot · 23/04/2024 13:02

Looks like the expected STAT results today have been moved back, so we continue to wait Confused

PandaPacer · 23/04/2024 18:19

DS just got home from school and is questioning if he even wants to go now - their levels of disorganisation and obfuscation seem excessive!

CoffeeMugShot · 23/04/2024 20:51

It's really poor @PandaPacer isn't it? I don't know why they're making it so hard, and it doesn't really speak well of how they'd treat the students once in.

Hi CoffeeMugShot and other parents and guardians whose DC had to do this test last year, I was wondering how things turned out for your DC after the test- how long results took to appear and decisions made. Would also be interested to hear from this year's applicants.

The price is now £124 this year and £170 if you include the option of receiving some practice materials offered. There's no information on what to expect and many parents deciding to pay up the £170 [and cut back on other things] were shocked to find that the "revision materials" were only 1 practice paper at a whopping cost of £46!

They left off the information about the STAT test from their website in autumn (when many candidates had to submit UCAS applications before 15 Oct) so many were literally ambushed in February when having not been informed there would be a test (even when enquiring about the course) they received an email saying that they had to pay up and take the test, or else forfeit the application- and by February it was too late to change course or university choices.

I looked up the link to see if there was financial help for such a high fee- on following the link, it turns out that if you're a student from a very low income household living in a council flat in a state school, you're not entitled to any help or reduction in fee unless you happen to have the "correct" postcode and the "correct" name of state school.! So basically UCL computer science departments only want rich students or a very select minority of not wealthy students (makes you wonder how many of this tiny select minority actually get in or instead accepts offers elsewhere) so that UCL can shrug and say "well, we tried [not very hard]". So much for UCL's founding ethos that they would champion the students not from the privileged backgrounds of the time (ie Anglican, from fee paying schools and wealthy). Their approach feels like a way of keeping out students who aren't well off.

No communication was sent from the department or UCL after submitting the application either, which could easily have been done as a form letter email to all applicants- if a computing department can't do something as basic as that, it makes you wonder about their competence.....

I went to the department website after they sent that email demanding the booking- they have belatedly added in a box mentioning a possible extra test for computer science BSc and MEng applicants.

This raises a serious red flag about how the university and departments organise things and it's made us now very wary of UCL in general and the computing department. Not sure we would accept an offer if one were given now- what next, extra £124 charges to attend compulsory lectures? Aptitude tests at a cost just to be able to sit summer exams and Finals?

We would not have minded taking the test - most candidates are already taking TMUA - but it's the lack of transparency (or the level of disorganisation and poor communication) that does not bode well for students.

Completely agree with your assessment of UCL CS.

DS had applied but we got so put off by the appalling disorganised implementation of the test that I complained to UCAS and we were allowed to withdraw outside of the deadline and apply somewhere else with equal consideration.

In the end DS decided to take a gap year and has reapplied this year for a different degree.

CoffeeMugShot · 06/03/2025 10:09

Hi @dailygrowl

DD was ultimately offered and accepted a place. I shared your reservations about the process and the test, and sorry to hear it's still no smoother this year. I do think there are some lessons that could and should be taken on board about transparency and cost.

While I was dubious about what this may translate into in terms of treatment of actual undergrads, I have to say that DD's experience as a student has been very positive so far. She's enjoying the course, and while there are lots of overseas students, she doesn't feel that she's out of place coming from a northern comp and a distinctly middle income family.

Good luck to your DC, CompSci is so frighteningly competitive that it is not an easy journey parenting them through the applications process.

Thank you, Woollyguru, thank you for your reassuring information! That's really helpful to know you were able to withdraw under these circumstances and choose another institution. I wish your DS every success!

Thanks! It worked out as he now has an offer from Cambridge!

Thank you, CoffeeMugShot, for your update! It's good to hear from someone whose DC went through the STAT debacle, accepted an offer and has started the academic year there with no further issues and is enjoying her experience there. Thank you very much, and I wish your DD a very happy and positive time there for the rest of her course too!
