Son got a degree two years ago. Has been working. Now wants to do part II of an architecture degree. He'll have been working away for two years he's living with his partner he met at university been completely financially independent since getting a job in September 2022. They rent a flat.

His boss wants him to continue in the practice part time. So will he get grants, loans, or are we still financially responsible for him?

No masters will be on his income, if he's working he may not get support though

You’re not no. But won’t his employer contribute? Has he chosen the course? If so, has he spoken to the university concerned, they may have some info for him, there’s lots of routes to funding these days.

No employer won't contribute. He just holds the job open part time

I think everyone however rich is entitled to about £12k of post graduate masters loan. A lot of people who want to be lawyers use it for their post grad year after they finish their LLB. You can only get one lot of £12k post grad student finance masters loan however so it needs to be used carefully.

Isn’t the architecture part 2 treated as slightly differently to a usual masters, it definitely used to be. Might be worth checking with the uni and student finance

Xenia · 13/03/2024 14:11

Might be - it sounds a really sensible one to do to finish architecture and get qualified. If it is like law even tough the exams may be longer and more expensive there is still just the about £12k post grad loan everyone can get although those who are lucky may find a law firm to sponsor them on those law exam year(s).

Masters funding isn't means tested at all.

Well son has filled in the form and it's asking for both our incomes apparently they have to have a three year gap before we're not included. I'm so cross.
