Exeter Uni - socialising - where does it happen?

We're just back from an offer day at Exeter having never visited before. It's a lovely uni and city but I just couldn't get a sense of where the social hubs are - certainly not on campus from what I could see. Anyone with DC there that can give any insights? It's my DC no1 choice at the moment in terms of the course etc but they noticed that it didn't have a 'student union' / hub like other uni's we've has visited

I was there many years ago. Has the Ram bar and Lemmy ( lemon grove) disappeared?

Their SU is called the Guild. The Ram is the bar plus the Lemmy. Based in the centre of campus! Devonshire house if you want to search. Plus loads in the town centre.

Not sure how they missed either the Ram (Student Guild pub) or the Lemmy (Student Guild nightclub), I'd have thought both of those were fairly central on a campus tour.

The Student Guild (or what other unis call Student Union) is mainly based in Devonshire House, where the Ram, Guild offices, shop, cafes, canteens etc are also based. This is right in the middle of campus, opposite the library and attached to the Great Hall (where the bigger gigs, balls etc are also held).

The Lemmy (Lemon Grove) is up the hill near the outside swimming pool.

Yes - the Ram Bar and Lemon Grove as mentioned above.
Lots of bars in town - Coolings, Gandy's etc
The Immy - The Imperial
Bars down on the quayside
Once they move out into private rental accommodation in 2nd year they are often in big old 6-8 bed houses and the socialising switches to house parties
Posh balls are held in the various hotels
Summer Ball (Enchanted Garden Ball?) over on some posh country estate out of town I think?

There is no shortage of socialising! Sometimes I wonder how DS got any work done!

Also within your hall. Informal gatherings.

My DS (first year at a different university) went to visit friends there. Utterly bowled over by the social life! Asked me if I had time for work when I was there (last century).

Social life at Exeter is big! As mentioned above lots of bars and gathering places on and off campus and of course beach fun in the summer. Everyone I know who went there has had a brilliant time (and managed to fit in some work to get a degree!)

My DS has a fantastic social life at Exeter but the uni does suit a type. If you want big clubs go elsewhere. If you like the sporty outdoor life, it’s great. He found most friends through his hall, sports and course. They always seem to be in the Weatherspoon’s (the Impy) or at Timepiece the nightclub. But there also seems to be lots of society events and balls and just hanging out in rooms. They seem to do lots of interesting things like going to watch the local rugby or football club and going to the races. He’s looking forward to a bit of beach life after exams next term if it will stop raining!

The big advantage of Exeter seems to be that everyone is within 25 mins walking distance, even in the 2nd year. Also it doesn’t empty out at weekends like some unis as the city is so far away from most other places in the UK that most students either can’t be bothered or can’t afford to go home every weekend! And the drug culture doesn’t seem to be as pronounced as at other universities which as a parent I think is good.

As an aside, I’ve had 3 go through different unis and I have to say Exeter has impressed me most of the 3. It was the most organised with the student onboarding and the pastoral care has been amazing.
