There are post-doc jobs obviously. Is that what you mean? You're going to have to be a bit more detailed as to what and why you're asking.

If you want more specific advice then you'll have to tell us which subject you are talking about. It is not compulsory to do a postdoc but for research-based careers it's useful to essential. But if you want to bugger off and be an accountant then no, not necessary at all.

Compulsory? No. Have almost all who get CS lectureships in good universities had postdoctoral positions, yes.

Why not look for yourself in jobs.ac.uk

And be a little more detailed in what you ask people - one word replies are like getting blood from a stone...

A post-doc position in this country is basically a fixed-term research job at a university or research establishment. It is not a higher qualification in the way that a PhD is.

Most people would do a few of these before either going for a lectureship or quitting research and going into something more lucrative or stable. I guess it depends on your overall aims as to whether it is worthwhile to do this in computer science - I should think you would get a higher salary in many other computing jobs. The advantage is you tend to have more independence and control of your own research when doing a post-doc (not always as depends on your group leader) than in a job. Some universities offer some general training e.g. how to teach to post-docs if this is what you mean by a post-doc programme.
