Suspending a year at uni

Hi, DC is looking to suspend current year at uni to re-do it next year. Has anyone got any advice or knowledge of finance implications?

He needs to speak to them, it's not the same everywhere. Best case scenario they will not charge tuition this term or next but it may be past the cut off now. Accommodation is likely to have to be paid

Does he want to pick up where he left off or restart the year? That will make a difference too
My dd, got to end of November last year then had to take leave of absence due to illness. She restarted this year, however she did restart properly as the uni moved from terms to semesters and the course program changed. So she lost the original terms accommodation fees and her tuition fees for the first term of her first attempt at her first year.

Check the refunds policy for fees and the cut off dates for partial refunds of fees. SFE will fund one additional year of funding but will consider this current year a funded year despite him going midway through (to be aware of this if he needs to repeat a year later on). Though some fees should go back to them if he paid his fees with a loan. If in Uni accommodation, he may get a terms rent back - needs to ask them. If in private, he will in most cases need to pay for the year. If his Students Union have finance advisers, get them to crunch the numbers for him. They are normally excellent.

All the advice above is good, OP. I would simply add that, if DC had not approached their School yet, it is important to do this right.

If they have any rapport with their Personal Tutor/Academic Advisor, it will linely be helpful to have a conversation with them. The PT may have some advice and can also support behind the scenes.

Granting the suspension is at the discretion of the School. Schools want students to succeed, so DC needs to make the case that this suspension will serve that purpose. If it is based in reasons of (physical or mental) health, my School would want evidence and concurrence from a professional to support that but would then be very likely to grant the leave.

Best wishes to your DC
