Maths teacher leaving before end of year

Hello, a friend has sent me here to see if someone might be able to help.

My child is sitting Advanced Higher maths this year but their teacher is leaving at the end of this month. The school only has one other maths teacher qualified to teach at this level but they have not taught the course for many years and also I have been informed is not available for the full timetable of classes.

My child will most likely be asked for their advanced higher maths as a condition for some of their university offers. Is there anything I can do here? Mitigating factors sent into universities etc. It feels like a bit of a bomb being dropped on my child's future. Any advice would be gratefully received.

Thank you

PMSL at the 'school allowed it' comments! How would school stop a teacher leaving that had given the correct notice? Even without notice, surely anyone can leave any job at any time and forfeit pay? (Not that I'm suggesting anyone should). Why should teachers not be allowed autonomy over their own employment decisions, like everyone else in the country? I'm not in indentured servitude to my school!

No doubt those that insist that teachers should only leave at the end of the school year will still want them to give a full terms notice and have no issue with teachers being stuck in a job for 12 months just because some posters can't understand about notice periods and the teacher retention and recruitment crisis.

WandaWonder I am a teacher. Obviously an old fashioned one who wouldn’t accept a final year Maths class knowing rightly I was going to bugger off after a few months to do something totally unrelated to teaching. Totally different if you are ill.

Oh and she was back in September.

As you well know many teachers (all that I have worked with) have never had a choice about the classes that they get to teach. But then maybe this is one of the reasons why the teacher left.

Maybe back in July when timetables were being sorted this teacher didn’t know they were going to leave at Christmas ? They may have sorted their new venture during October and handed their notice in by the correct time.

FrippEnos not my experience , and not this teacher’s either. Neither of us work in the UK.

Not working in the UK, England (in my case) would probably explain the difference in our experience.
