What kind of thing do you want to know?

Greenbike · 10/01/2024 11:11

I went there! Admittedly over ten years ago but still in touch. Nice place, maybe less stuffy than some colleges (although all of Oxford is less stuffy than it used to be). Beautiful gardens. Further out than most so expect a bit more walking/cycling.

Are you asking for yourself or a DC? If a DC I would suggest letting them lead the decision about what college to apply to, rather than being prescriptive. Encourage them to go to open days with friends rather than parents.

Thank you - my son has been offered a place there and it's a college I'd never heard of so just curious!quite like the idea it's a bit less "stuffy" than some of the others! X

Mine too, he applied to a different college but was also interviewed by LMH and they've offered him a place.

I’m sure they’ll both have a great time

GinandDubonnet · 10/01/2024 15:53

I have a DD there at the moment - in her first year so has only done a term.

She’s very happy there. A lovely relaxed and friendly atmosphere, great food and a lovely setting. It is a little way out of the centre but it’s a nice walk through the uni parks into town.

We went to an offer holder day last year (in April I think) so am pretty sure they will be running one again this year. Definitely worth going as it gives you a chance to have a good look round. DC will meet with their tutors and other offer holders doing their course.

Malala Yousafzai went to LMH. It's very relaxed, off the tourist trail and full of normal people, geeks, sporty people, musical types, public school boys....just like every other Oxford college!

DS got pooled to LMH (now in 3rd year) and he absolutely loves his college.

It is a good size - big enough to have a decent sized cohort but not so large you get lost in it. DS has made a wonderful group of friends (he is from a state comprehensive and has never felt at all out of place). Accommodation being available for three years is a real boon.

LMH is in a beautiful part of Oxford - the neighbourhood is so much more peaceful than the city centre colleges. The college grounds are lovely (they back onto the river) and it is right next door to University Parks. The walk into the centre is only about 20 minutes, and takes even less time if you cycle.
Driving to LMH is easy, which we very much appreciate.

DS is so glad that he ended up there and not at the central college that he applied to.

I've always liked LMH. Really nice location and beautiful grounds and accommodation. Congrats

Thx all for this lovely feedback - think he will be very happy there - he's also a very keen cricketer - so a bonus if he gets into a team!! X

It’s a great place - some of the most beautiful gardens in Oxford, on the river (few colleges are) and very spacious. It’s a bit out of town so a bike will be useful. It’s right by the university parks and you can walk that way into town if you don’t want to cycle. People I know who studied there had a great time and felt it was a warm community. (Though nearly everyone who studies at Oxford thinks their own college is best whichever one they end up at.)

French and linguistics -- I guess that's the sort of subject where each college might only admit one or two candidates per year.

Rzim · 11/01/2024 20:16

Yup mine is classics - think they typically offer 5 places each year! Imagine our two will come across each other then! X

My DD is at LMH too, first year. Like many others she was reallocated there and we’d also never heard of it! She’s happy there, only complaint so far has been the price of things in the bar which are much higher than Mansfield college apparently. You get accommodation for 3 years and whilst there is a food hall you aren’t obliged to use it like in some colleges. It’s not a rich college though so accommodation is on the more expensive end in comparison to some others. However, as it’s slightly north of the city centre parking is a doddle, albeit mega expensive.
