Me. Left uni & have always worked in social housing since. Had several roles there & really enjoy it.

bottleofbeer · 28/04/2025 22:42

In my maternal family there are 4 of us with criminology degrees. 1 works in social housing, 1 worked at a prison before working for a drugs rehabilitation charity, 1 is a project manager at a uni & the other is a forensic psychologist.

All got their interest in criminology from their nan.

TizerorFizz · 29/04/2025 17:56

Being a psychologist requires a totally different degree and path to qualification . It’s not possible directly from a criminology degree - assuming they are qualified of course!

PaintDecisions · 29/04/2025 17:59

Yup, me. Joined the police as a civilian, then became an officer, then left to join the Civil Service.

StrongandNorthern · 29/04/2025 18:01

I do.
She's a police officer now.

Sorry if it’s a silly question, but why do quite a few people seem to go into jobs in social housing after doing this degree (judging by responses here)? Interested as dd is considering Criminology for A level

TizerorFizz · 02/05/2025 23:09

@Violet80 Housing is a job dealing with people and doesn’t have any particular degree requirement. It’s more to do with actually getting a job than a must have career. Could be useful for housing legalities I guess but most people can learn them. Criminology is law lite. I’d definitely swerve it at A level. What are the other possibles?

AusMumhere · 02/05/2025 23:22

I did criminology and criminal justice. It is a social science, not 'law lite'.
I had offers for prison services, court services and victim support.

TizerorFizz · 02/05/2025 23:28

Yes but you cannot practise law . Some people seem to think it’s the same- criminal being the issue. I cannot see any advantage in studying it at A level. Too niche. There’s a lot of social science grads but not enough jobs. Hence varying answers on this thread but no real high flyers.

My DD has a criminology degree. She worked in a prison for a few years but now works for a charity.

I did it at a Russell group uni, I am now a social worker in child protection. Another girl on my course has gone on to be a barrister.

That’s not a direct result of the Criminology degree though. criminology doesn’t qualify one as a SW or barrister
A masters must have have been taken to qualify in SW and Law

Criminology is not law lite. Not in least
Criminology is a social science

GammonAndEgg · 02/05/2025 23:36

Detention Custody Officer for immigration.

TizerorFizz · 03/05/2025 07:50

@Zone2NorthLondon They would need to do a law conversion course to to be a barrister. As my earlier point. Then most likely a criminal barrister not serving much. High end earnings in commercial not available probably.
