Leeds vs Manchester for history

Dd has offers from both and trying to figure out her preference ( we know we have loads of time).

Manchester has a more modular course, while at Leeds she can take a year in Europe mid-course, which she’s very keen on. Both courses look good for content ( Leeds is actually international history and politics) and she liked both cities….

I haven’t been to uni for 100 years and know nothing about either city or uni so can’t really advise her. Does anyone have any pointers?

I went to Leeds uni decades ago and never left - it’s a fabulous city and friends’ kids who are at the uni now are thoroughly enjoying it. My ds is away at uni but he - and all his friends who are studying all over the place - all miss Leeds!

Saying that he has a fair few friends who have crossed the Pennines and are enjoying their time in Manchester. Both are fairly expensive for student accommodation I believe.

I like visiting Manchester but its centre is much more sprawling - Leeds is fairly compact and accessible

Possibly a biased review 😄

DD is currently studying at Manchester and loving it.

The accommodation does seem expensive and in short supply.

My daughter is doing History and English at Leeds. She loves the course and the city. She didn't consider Manchester, but in the end her main reason for choosing Leeds was the atmosphere of both university and city, and she has continued to feel the same.

Manchester is a bigger city and is a bigger university . What might she do afterwards? I’d consider employment too as one might have an edge over the other. Studying abroad is always a bonus in my view.

I would consider what means the most to her. Does being in a huge city outweigh the smaller one? The unis are both great so I’d just go on city and which she prefers but factor in course differences too. DD had offers from both of these and went to neither!

All three of mine went to Leeds, and one is now living and working there. Fab city. Fab university.

But with a positive attitude, your DD will enjoy either city.

Bunnyannesummers · 28/11/2023 13:26

Manchester have had serious issues with accom this year, don’t know the details but worth looking into?

TizerorFizz · 28/11/2023 16:44

Apparently Leeds has more student accommodation than any other city. Same cannot be said about housing the locals.

poetryandwine · 28/11/2023 18:15

DD is lucky to hold these two excellent offers from strong universities.

Do Manchester History not offer Study Abroad? I ask because I know they offer SA in my subject and usually these are university-to-university agreements.

I think DD should attend Offer Holder Days at both unis, if possible. These can offer much more insight than ordinary Visiting Days. She could also join the online forum The Student Room and pose questions to History UGs at both unis. Then she should follow her intuition.

Manchester do offer study abroad.

Itslookinggood · 29/11/2023 17:44

Thankyou all. This is massively helpful.

dd really, liked both, and yes she is very lucky. I checked Manchester again, and unless I have misread, for history only, you can do a semester abroad but if you want to do a full year, she’d need to do e.g. History and French - which she doesn’t want to do.

we didn’t know there were Offer Holder days, Thankyou so much for that. We will find out when and attend.

Yes I heard student accommodation was an issue in Manchester. Another factor to take into account.

have decided to go to the offer holder days, visit each city again and make a choice at that point. Which is a great excuse for two excellent days out.

thanks again.

Yes one semester but often a whole year isn’t offered as MFL students get priority and funding doesn’t cover everyone. Study in English speaking countries is usually competitive.

ionlywantto · 29/11/2023 18:24

My MFL child got no help, financial or otherwise, from Leeds for their year abroad. I don't know what other departments are like, if your child wants to do a year abroad be prepared for how much it costs.

TizerorFizz · 29/11/2023 22:43

Turing funding is now only going to the poorest students. It’s means tested. It’s a moot point as to whether a history undergrad should get money when there’s not enough for MFL students.
