Loughborough University

DD is considering applying for Loughborough University for an Engineering degree. She really likes the course and I know it has a good reputation for Engineering but I read a few negative comments in mumsnet which are putting me off a bit. I know nowhere is perfect but have not heard anything negative from Bath and Sheffield for instance, just positive comments.

Any advice? Thank you

@NamechangeRugby

What area of Engineering? Very many unis offer very good courses but there is some variation depending on discipline. Has he given area of interest much thought? There's a lot of info available from various sources which might help.

@Eve Congratulations to your DS on job! He has done so well to hang in there. I bet he will thrive in a work environment.

Thanks very much for info, that is helpful.

@Africa2go that's great, glad he is having a good time. Just curious, did he do FM? Thank you for update.

@TizerorFizz Mechanical engineering . Some discussion of electrical or a combination of the two.

DD still has a couple of years to go, but it has all happened so quick for DS, she is thinking ahead. Thanks very much

No he didn't do FM but he's not an engineer.

@NamechangeRugby I'm a bit qualified to answer your question!

My DD went to Loughborough but didn't do engineering. She was very happy there and the teaching and student support (of careers advice) was excellent.

My DS did engineering (not mechanical), at Imperial and we went through the whole FM A level thing. His school offered it and therefore so he took it. However he was friends with others at uni who didn't do FM at A level. One friend in particular struggled in the first year (although 1 module was a catch-up to include things from the FM A level syllabus - easy for those who had already studied it - not so much for those who didn't).

However .... his two friends who hadn't done FM A level both came out with 1st Class degrees so it didn't have an overall effect.

So - in conclusion - with your DC definitely not being able to do FM A level - it's possible for them to do engineering though greater study will be needed in the first year.

@ItsReallyOnlyMe that is so helpful thank you.

Yes, I think first year will be a baptism of fire (to me, even thinking of trying to catch up on FM quickly and without good support sends a shudder up my spine).
