Liverpool university

Has anyone got experience of Liverpool University?

DS is considering studying Product Design Engineering but not sure if he should put it on the list or not. How strong engineering is at this university? Looking at the course it doesn’t seem they have accreditation from other institutions.

What is it like in general? Atmosphere, cost of living, quality of life, safety? We would be grateful for advice

I am also wondering what the course content are so different for same degree in different universities for product design engineering: Loughborough, Strathclyde, Liverpool.

And Design Engineering: Bath and IC.

I would assume same degree will be similar subjects but doesn’t look like that’s the case.

I think I would be wary that it hasn’t got accreditation if other similar courses have.
My DC2 had it as their insurance choice for mechanical engineering (which is accredited). We were very impressed with the facilities in the engineering building.
DC1 studied there for a different Stem course and had a great time both within the university and in Liverpool itself. Felt safe there. Liverpool is very friendly. Accommodation in first year was expensive as opted for accommodation next to the university - following years a lot cheaper.

Thank you. I just can’t see it it has the accreditation. If it doesn’t we won’t put it on the list I don’t think

Liverpool a great city, think something like 24% are students. Can't help with the specific course but my dc chose based on location and coursem

My knowledge is no doubt out of date but when I was there, engineering was very strong. I had more friends who were engineers than anything else and they went on to get decent engineering jobs.

Liverpool is a great city to be a student. The uni is in a great position, just on edge of city centre and halls accommodation available either right next to it or an easy very frequent bus ride away (very close to green spaces). I always felt safe (though like all cities there’s areas to avoid at night) and loved the friendliness, nightlife, architecture, river and of course the football (though I expect it’s now priced beyond reach of most students). Rent in year 2/3 was also reasonable relative to many other student cities.

Thank you. Sounds like it may be a good option. Need to check reg the course accreditation.

DD has studied there for several years now ( not engineering)
Friendly and safe city ( with usual caveats re walking home alone, dodgy areas etc).
Lots of fun opportunities in Uni and in city. Easy access to rest of UK.
Student accommodation is plentiful - allocated first come first served so beware if late offer. Beyond year 1, lots of student houses in specific areas, mostly good quality and cheap, never paid more than £130/week.

@Honeyflower77 I cannot find the MEng or BEng Product Design Engineering at Liverpool on the Engineering Council approved course list either. I’m somewhat surprised. The unis do make it clear if the course is approved. Maybe contact Liverpool or the Engineering Council? Electronics and Electrical Engineering courses there are accredited. They make it clear they are. Is the course DS wants new?

SingingSands · 19/11/2023 21:51

Can't comment on engineering but my DD is 2nd year at Liverpool and loving it. Brilliant city, and low accommodation costs (£113 per week for house share this year). Also doesn't seem to have accommodation shortages like other unis. One younger cousin studied there (graduated 2021 and stayed to pursue career) and one other cousin has started this year so it's been popular in my family.

I love visiting Liverpool, genuinely a real buzz about the city and lots going on, plenty job opportunities etc.

Honeyflower77 · 20/11/2023 07:27

Thank you all. It seems like a good city and university and it will fit DS. It is a shame reg the course. Not sure if it is new or why it has not got accreditations. I sent a message yesterday to enquire about it.

@Honeyflower77 Have you trawled through all the accredited courses listed by the Engineering Council? The web site does not even say it’s applied for. DS does, presumably know the difference between MEng and BEng regarding career progression. The MEng Product Design Engineering and Management is listed.

We didn’t think of checking the Engineering council. Thank you. The or her universities list accreditations from: IET, IED, Institute of mechanical engineers.

yes, we know the difference between BEng and MEng; he wants to do MEng

The Engineering Council list a huge number of courses. They might be the best place to start and contact them with course number etc.

Yes. Those are the institutions that award chartered engineer or incorporated engineer status. The EC accredits the initial degree courses as teaching the standard required to move onto the next stage. I find it odd this course isn’t listed but the one I quoted is. (Haven’t checked if that’s a current course though!) You can filter for current courses which I think I did. Plus you can filter for Uni of Liverpool, not John Moores. I didn’t find the filter very good though. They might be able to help on the phone. Sometimes you see accreditation applies for. It is odd Liverpool says nothing but then lists top drawer employers.

Thanks, that’s very helpful
