Help please

19 year old son going to Uni in January and is registered as living at our matrimonial home where his Dad lives but stays with me as well whilst we are going through separation.

The application has been made with his Dad as parent one as he technically lives at the same address but my income for 2020-2021 was lower and therefore could make him entitled to a higher level of grant

His Dad has submitted his form as our son put his name down as parent one, and I have been asked to provide my details as well

can my son change the details stating that he lives between us or will both our details be looked at and he will be given a grant on the lowest income?

It’s all a bit confusing!!

Thanks in advance

Both of your incomes will be considered so it won’t make any difference

I don't think thats right. It's just who the student is living with.

It's a loan not a grant.

I would look at the actual figures on .gov before you go any further because it might make no difference at all.

And, it is based on household income rather than parental income. Which does seem crazy. It drives my friend mad because her son gets the minimum because she lives with her new boyfriend.

I thought it was that case but he put his dad down as that is where he is registered as living. We haven’t been separated long so living arrangements have been up in the air as he knew he wanted to go to Uni in January so we kept addresses etc as they were until house sorted

I’ve just found a screen shot of it, I thought I had one.

It will be for 2023-2024 though.

Oooh love a good fiddle of the system!

Bunnyannesummers · 12/11/2023 23:46

if he is registered at that house and lives with his dad at that house he puts his dad down for finance

Thanks everyone for your advice - will keep as is!

Is that screenshot for England? It's very different from what we have to pay.

Yes - the threshold for the full amount is definitely not in the region of £50 000...

This screenshot is from using the calculator on the gov.uk site, putting in household income of £50 000, living away from home and studying outside London. (The equivalent for studying away from home, in London, is £9 374 out of a maximum £13 002).

But back to the OP, if she is now not living at the same address as her (ex-ish) DH and their DS, her income is not part of the equation for SFE purposes.

That's much more like it, @MarchingFrogs . I understand the point about the OP's circumstances. I didn't want a casual reader thinking a £50k household income equalled no household contribution required.
