How long should a university keep records of my credits?

Hi everyone, just wondering if anybody has experience of leaving a university degree course and knows the answer to my question?

I left a university degree apprenticeship shortly before completing the second academic year due to a change of career direction. I am interested in continuing higher education with a different institution.

After contacting the university and ordering my transcript, it only records and documents credits and marks attained in the first academic year.

Somebody at the university claimed that perhaps if the academic year was incomplete when I left that any of the credits I earned will be lost.

This seems unfair as I completed the exams, portfolios and assignments as expected upto that point and was happy with the grades.

Is it common practice for universities to do this if somebody leaves?

As it stands I cannot look into any credit transfer options or prove that I comfortably studied at level 5.

Any relevant info would be greatly appreciated.. thanks in advance!

Well I graduated from university in 1991 and requested my transcript years later, to apply for some post grad study. Somewhere in the change over of their records from paper to digital they had documented that I had taken a course that didn't exist when I was there and also had lost one off the list that I actually took (and did well in). When I told them of the mistakes, they changed it for me and reissued the transcript. I suspect if you can provide evidence of your missing work they might be able to do similar. Good luck!

Thank you JWL!

That gives me hope.. errors obviously happen from time to time, just worried all that work I submitted that passed will have been lost.

They might say on their websites perhaps? I gave a data protection course at a university and that one kept degree results for periods as long as 70 years in case a very very old person requested results or the person became famous and there was a scandal about claiming fake degrees.

If you left before the end of the second year, it may be that your marks were never taken through the exam board/progression processes and so aren’t considered earned. Had you submitted all of the work for the modules/did you actually finish the year?

Not my area of expertise however!
