Which universities have the most ‘hipsters’?

Just for fun, which universities have the highest proportion of ‘hipsters’?

I appreciate ‘hipster’ may not necessarily be the term used by university-age DC any more, but I mean: trendy/alternative/creative/arty/into music and more underground culture/moustaches/queer

Hopefully you get the idea.

Creative arts unis? How many young people are alternative “hippies” now? And hipster isn’t quite the same. If they are at uni they are pretty mainstream in my view. I think in mainstream unis, few. What is “underground” culture in 2023? Difficult to judge really. Liking music is pretty universal. Trendy? Loads would consider themselves to be trendy in how they dress from Aberystwyth to Winchester.

Sussex

Brightandshining · 22/09/2023 13:49

Id say its Central Saint Martins obviously! See them all about kings cross where the new campus is and it looks very 'out there' quite entertaining to watch all the different outfits

Chilli81 · 22/09/2023 13:50

Sussex definitely. Maybe SOAS too.

ApolloandDaphne · 22/09/2023 13:52

According to my DD Bristol uni was full of such types.

Startingagainandagain · 22/09/2023 13:57

Central Saint Martins, Goldsmith, London College of Fashion...basically all the arts schools.

I went to Saint Martins :).

Scruffington · 22/09/2023 13:57

the Art School in Glasgow is not short of a hipster or two.

Windseven · 22/09/2023 14:03

I think perhaps the frame of reference has changed a bit. I get the feeling that alt/queer/creative is a vibe and trendy/music focused is another? Although obvs there’s a crossover as well in the Venn Diagram of hipsters.

The former I get the impression Sussex/UEA/Sheffield are good stomping grounds and the latter most of the big cities with a good music scene eg Leeds/Glasgow/London esp the arts unis as mentioned above.

All just an opinion mind.

Well, when I went in 1974 ,my choice was Essex.Well known for being full of rabid left wingers. We were all politicos and argued about whether we were Trotskyists , Marxists, Maoists, Marxist-Leninists , Anarchists, International Socialists etc. My oldest joined the LibDems when he went!!!!

TizerorFizz · 22/09/2023 15:29

My DD went to LCF. Not remotely hipster. More high end! It takes all sorts. Sheffield has slightly alternative areas but lots of the students are pretty ordinary. Just a few people are like this at many unis. DD1 was at Bristol. This description is not remotely Bristol from what I could see. Some living in Bristol? Possibly. That’s not the same though.

My DS has just started at Glasgow School of Art, he is a bit of a hipster himself but was a bit disappointed that most of the student societies are Queer focussed which isn't his thing, however I think he'll find plenty to do outside formal societies.

pompomdaisy · 22/09/2023 15:51

We just have geeks in York not hipsters. 😉

nearlywinteragain · 22/09/2023 15:52

Goldsmiths was overrun with them

nearlywinteragain · 22/09/2023 15:53

Which having previously been to pleasantly geeky York was an unpleasant discovery.

nearlywinteragain · 22/09/2023 15:52

Goldsmiths was overrun with them

I was there in the early 80s. Then it was theatre and dance students posing in the Refectory like the Kids from Fame.

TizerorFizz · 22/09/2023 17:49

40 years ago isn’t really relevant. Most students aren’t standing out as hipsters now. It’s a minority.

Pourmeanotherwine · 22/09/2023 18:51

Arts uni's like Falmouth? Also places like Bristol and Brighton?

marketing101 · 22/09/2023 18:56

Goldsmiths or Central Saint Martin

I think the ‘hipster’ is going through a more subtle phase right now vs 10-15 years ago.

It’s still there just slightly harder for oldies to detect vs the heavily irony-laden presentation it once was.
