DC wishes to apply the mathematics or computer science courses at Imperial College. What are the potential drawbacks of put these two courses in the UCAS?

DC just received his first offer. It is from IC of the JMC course. At least in IC, you can apply for different courses.

The trick is getting your personal statement to match both to the level they would want.

It depends - I know a lot of universities don't like someone applying for 2 different nursing degrees at the same uni eg adult or child

A few years ago my DC1 applied for two courses at Durham - Geography and Combined Social Sciences - he had offers from both.

In the end, DC received both offers from IC. Standard entry requirements:
JMC asked "2A*" 2A+STEP
Maths asked "2A*" A

Great news, OP!

DC should educate themselves about STEP, especially if leaning towards JMC.

Cambridge set the grades for STEP nationwide. They calibrate grades so that about 50% of those with Cambridge offers will fall at the STEP hurdle. So all candidates should strategise carefully. These are the best Maths pupils in their schools, they know the problems are solved with knowledge from A level and FM. Many of them find it hard to believe in the reality of the situation.

I would not presume to say how much of this information you should share with DC, or how. Perhaps they would find it most enlightening and least threatening to learn about STEP from the online forum The Student Room.

Obviously I think the Maths offer as you have written it is much more sensible.

Best wishes to DC
