Online A levels

hi
my 18 year old is wanting to study an a level online in her gap year, to boost her UCAS points. I’m navigating all the different online providers, and I’m stuck with finding an exam centre that accepts private A level candidates. There’s a couple of online course providers that will sort the exam centre for a fee of £500 extra on top of the A level course charge!! I think that seems a bit excessive, but maybe I’m wrong ?? The closest exam centre they can offer is 40 miles away. Wanted something more local, but everywhere only seems to offer GCSE private candidates. I’m in West Yorkshire and it’s an A level Psychology course. Any help or suggestions appreciated.

Hi OP. I'll PM you if I can figure out how!

We used kings InterHigh last year. There's a company they use that have a local exam centre in Doncaster.

Thank you, I will look into them 😊

I did an A level as bit of a hobby 4 years ago. I contacted the adult education section of our city Council and they sorted it for me. I sat them with other A level students in a local high school. A bit surreal, tbh! I was old enough to be their mother ....

I did have to pay all the exams fees as a private candidate though, and that cost be around £600 if I remember rightly.

I agree with contacting local schools. We’ve definitely have external candidates sitting at my school - one year someone’s grandad did an a-level and came to sit them with us.

But yes, you will have to pay the private exam fees and it’s not cheap.

suggest you look on facebook for the group "Home Education UK exams and alternatives", and ask there. There are several thousand in the group - some will be local to you. Tutors & Exams have a network of exam centres and can offer all exam boards. You are probably looking at £400-600 for an A level though.

The HE exams wiki is sometimes worth a look

We used my daughters previous secondary school as a centre and it cost £100 total for her to sit her 3 A level exams. Worth calling local schools.

I would be tempted to pay the finders fee for a nearby exam center. Slightly different but my DD is going to take one of the Oxford entry exams in October and the 2 nearest sites are not open this year, so she has to travel 300 miles to take it! (we are from the uk but overseas at the moment). So she has to fly, drive, stay in a hotel overnight, take the exam and travel all the way home again. Its insane.
