Univeristy Application Advice

DD applied last year for a particular course at Uni and got 4 offers. She accepted Manchester ( her def fave) and Cardiff.
However she changed her mind about the course she wanted to do but Manchester we’re oversubscribed for the new course and couldn’t fit her in- even tried on results day. Rather than go elsewhere she decided to have a gap year and reapply for 2024
She has AAA which is what is required
she is about to apply again and is still desperate for Manchester
Obviously I’m worried that if she gets a rejection she will be devastated and will feel she has wasted the year.

I am wondering if it’s worth a direct message from her to the admissions team in this department saying how much she wants to come and that she has taken a gap year just so she can come to Manchester and this course? And that she would firm an offer immediately if they made one. They may actually remember her from earlier messages when she was trying to change into this department from her other course - can’t work out if that’s a positive or negative!

any advice welcome!!

Self study FM AS?

poetryandwine · 20/09/2023 20:47

I think @Chicekennuggets has a good idea. DD needs to make it real - actually do it and discuss her text, her method of study and her progress in the PS. Briefly, I know!

clary · 20/09/2023 20:57

What is she actually doing? That would be a start.

Could she do some maths-related online courses - there are plenty about that are free?

Is there any maths involved in her gap year plans?

Hi,
My son wants to study economics at LSE. He got predicated Maths A*, Economics A, Physics A,Further Maths B. GCSE grade 9 in maths, further maths, physics, chemistry, RE, Economics, geography. Grade 8 in English and biology, grade 7 in Spanish
He is also sitting for TMUA to make his application stronger and has also done senior maths challenge.
Please advise me if he stands a chance for LSE economics as he has predicted grade B in further maths?
He is also applying to UCL, Bath, Nottingham maybe Kings but his heart is set on LSE.
Thanks

@Economics2024 You should be aware that LSE has a high percentage of international students and invariably students especially UK Students will be applying with all Astars at both A level and Astar equivalent at gcses so exceeding the standard offer. It is super competitive so he should be prepared to not get an offer and kf he does its a bonus.

I wouldn’t contact the admissions department- they can’t prioritise her over another applicant just because of butt kissing.

Just tell her to write a good statement.

YellSomeMoreAdam · 02/10/2023 19:12

@Economics2024 71% of students at LSE are international students so the available spaces are much lower than other universities. I can see that their entry grades are listed as A star AA with the A star in maths. He needs to understand that entry grades are the absolute lowest grades they will accept students in on. This is across all universities. Therefore most applicants will have higher grades than the entry. A good TMUA result could help but I would feel his grades are low against other applicants considering it is LSE. There are probably Freedom of Information requests that show the grade profile of those who were successful in getting in.

We were told that when Oxford listed their entry as AAA that just over 40% of their offers went to applicants with 4 or more A star predictions, considering the number of applicants with that profile was around 18% of the total applying (at the time we were given that information) they take a lot from the very top, then the next category is 3 A stars. By the time they get down to entry grades it is a much smaller number.

I would get him to look now at whether he can bring up those grades especially the B for FM, ask his teacher what he can do, look back over his year 12 exams to see why he got a lower grade.

Just a quick one again!
do universities see that the person has applied before.
thinking maybe just not mentio the course change as maybe makes her look a bit flakey!
think she has a new Ucas Id if she applies again.
thanks!

Just wanted to update - she got into Manchester. Over the moon doesn’t come close - many thanks for everyone’s help - it was appreciated.
we didn’t email them directly but just put a ton of effort into the PS.
Thanks God it’s sorted!!
