How do students 'watch TV' these days?

I am assuming they use their laptops? What do I need to put on DSs before he heads off?

On phones, laptops, tablets but probably only on catch up. Remember there are strict rules about tv licences and live tv/iPlayer so most will just use Netflix

BeyondMyWits · 17/09/2023 15:48

Most don't watch TV at all. All dds' "houses" at uni just use laptops with nextflix, disney+, prime, appletv... whatever streaming service has an offer. And YouTube. But mainly spend time socially ... I think they are all-screened-out...

From www.gov.uk on TV licences/students @AIstolemylunch

Students
If you’re living in university accommodation you’ll need a TV Licence to watch TV in your own room. Shared areas may already be covered by a TV Licence.
If you live at another address outside of term time, you can use its TV Licence while you’re at university on any device that’s:

  • battery powered
  • not plugged in
  • not connected to an aerial

So can a uni student use the family TV licence if they claim to have watched telly whilst their laptop wasn't plugged in?

AIstolemylunch · 17/09/2023 17:01

Not asking about TV licences, thanks.

I am asking about what subscriptions they use etc. Or whether ther is any way to have freeview on a laptop etc.

My bad!, sorry.

In that case, DD here will be making full use of the family netflix and amazon accounts, apple music and Spotify.

misssunshine4040 · 17/09/2023 17:13

Can he not decide for himself what streaming services he wants to use? Surely you don't need to set that up and he's more than capable?
If you want to pay for it, he can just ask you to add your payment details

PuppyMonkey · 17/09/2023 17:21

Think the teen will work out how to do it himself.

AnneVeronica · 17/09/2023 18:12

Well, I am asking about TV licences so happy if anyone can answer my question 🙂

No, not if "they claim" it wasn't plugged in. But yes if it actually, factually, wasn't plugged in.

To use live services or catch up like iplayer on line you have to tick a (legal) box to say that your viewing is covered by a valid TV licence... may seem just like a little t+c box, but it is there to make sure you know it is a legal requirement to have a licence in most situations.

But still the fact is that most uni students don't watch actual telly... unless they do their bills through somewhere like unihomes who like to pop that one in there for parental peace of mind.

Netflix is the main one

UsingChangeofName · 17/09/2023 20:11

Stream stuff on laptop.

If want to watch a live sporting event, then go to the pub.

Why ask MN instead of your DS? It's no use to him if others want to watch Netflix, but Netflix doesn't offer a lot of things for him to watch; it would just be a waste of money.

If you're happy to pay for a subscription of this sort, you can tell him you'd be happy to pay if there's one he likes. No point throwing your money away on something your DS isn't interested in.

There's no universal thing for students, because students aren't a monolith.

Saucery · 17/09/2023 20:23

What does he normally watch at home, or you as a family? Netflix, maybe Apple TV, Prime, Disney+ ? You could start with one or two of those if he watches them now.

BoohooWoohoo · 17/09/2023 20:25

Depends what kind of content he likes.
What do you subscribe to? just give him the passwords and logins to those.

noctiscaelum · 17/09/2023 20:30

Does he even watch the tv? I was a student decades ago, and tv wan't even something I even thought about. My dc don't watch tv at all, just used it to play games or watch films.

Like other pp says, if the children wants something and they want you to pay for it, they would ask, or you can ask them if they want anything.
