Durham Open Day Parking

Hi, off to Durham on Sat for the open day. Any tips on parking?

The university has encouraged everyone to use park and ride but notice even their spaces are limited!

We live over 200 miles away so won't be there before 10am. I checked out Just Park and Parkopedia - nothing. Any hotels charge for parking? Thanks

You can pay to park at the Marriot at the foot of the Elvet Bridge. I would book though. The Belmont park and ride is usually quieter than the other one near the botanics

One P&R is quite near the hill colleges - I'm guessing that one fills, even though they deliberately don't mention it in the publicity. We went to one of the recommended ones and only a fraction of spaces were taken, but I think we were there about 9am. The council are very organised - there are notices on the buses warning of impending open days so the locals know that things will be busy. They had staff on duty at the P&Rs to help direct people and make sure we knew where to get off the bus. There was something very surreal about a car park where every car contained a teenager and a 50-something!

Thank you both. I've contacted the Marriot and because it's the open day we can't book unfortunately, although if we're early enough there may possibly be spaces available. My DD has access needs and ideally we'd like to book.

Excellent park and ride car park just above the uni, across from lots of it.
Was free too I think- not 100%

hayleybeach · 12/09/2023 17:29

grafittiartist - do you know what it's called? Each of the three park and rides only has about 400 spaces each and the university says it expects up to 10,000 visitors!!

I’d go by train!

If you have to drive get there very early ( and I mean early , get breakfast in town ) and use the park and ride on the hill near the botanical gardens

If she has access needs, talk to the disability support team and see if they can suggest something/facilitate parking, it will be a good way to see how responsive/useful they are!

If you have access needs contact the University I think they do have some accessibility spaces at the colleges available

That one is Howlands. I wouldn't expect to be able to get anywhere near it unless you are very, very early. The other two are Belmont and Sniperly.

We’ve always parked in the multi storey down near the passport office.

I live in Durham and work for the university, Belmont park and ride is a good one and howlands is just over the road from colleges and university buildings.

Many of the villages close to the A1 have good bus links to Durham. My middle one used to stay at the Durham end of Bowburn (less than 10 minutes by bus to the library area/buses every 15 minutes). Even closer to the Sports Centre (about a mile). Shincliffe closer but parking might be more limited.
