Question regarding nurse training - any nurses around?

My Sisters step DD (20) is hoping to start nurse training in September or March next year. She doesn't know what branch of nursing to do though. We thought it was just general nursing but apparantly not anymore.

She said she doesn't want to work with Children so that leaves 3 other branches apparantly.

What branch has the best career prospects, i.e. getting a job once qualified?

I have told her to post on nursing websites for info - just wanted to ask on here though.

Hi - been a nurse for 20 years. Cos the remaining 3 branches of nursing you speak of are so different from one another, I personally would advise her to go for the one she would find most satisfaction in. Mental health nursing is very different from general adult nursing which again is very different from nursing those with learning difficulties.
She may find a job in one speciality more easily than in another, but i would imagine thats poor compensation for feeling you've qualified in an area thats not your real interest.

I'd say go for general nursing, has she had any experience? Is she sure it's what she wants?

By general nursing do you mean working with Adults? I told her there may be more jobs available in this field, as there are more places available to study in this area apparantly.

She has done care in the community work looking after the elderly and she has worked with people with Learning difficulties - she enjoyed them both I think.

Thanks for your replies.

I'm just coming to the end of my adult (general) nurse education.
I did think about changing to mental health but my tutor (who is mental health background) suggested I stick with general as you can always do an extra 12-18months if you want to change later whereas if you do child or mental health and want to change to adult you have to do the whole 3 years.

If she does the branch prog you always have the option to move at the end of the common foundation programme which is the first year so she can keep her options open.

Im a 2nd year mental health nurse. I love it, best thing I have ever done.

Bloody hard though.

Thanks mosschops and tiredemma. I just texted her telling her what you have written, and she replied saying although she would have to do the common foundation year, she didn't realise she could change at the end of it. She will phone the uni tomorrow and find out. thanks.
