Exeter open day- parking

As everyone has been so helpful about parking for Bristol (special thanks to whomever said Trenchard Parking lot as it was very convenient) and Cambridge, any tips for parking at Exeter for the October open day? The website is not at all helpful, going on about permits etc which is for regular students.

The website says to contact the Student Recruitment office for information about parking on open days which is [email protected]. I think it's no.25 here https://www.exeter.ac.uk/staff/car-parking/faqs/#a15
I think they direct you to off campus car parks and have minibuses between car parks and campuses if you're visiting Streatham or St Luke's.

We went to the open day in June 22 on a Saturday. As I remember we got to the campus 9.30/9.45 ish and were directed to a car park. It was filling up fast then so I wouldn't arrive too late. I cant remember anything about getting a permit.

When there's no rugby on, they have used Westpoint in the past, a show ground on the A3052 Sidmouth Road from which they bus people to the university. However, it's a couple of years since I have noticed it. Westpoint is only a couple of minutes from junction 30 of the M5

So I can avoid it, when are the open days please?

mondaytosunday · 10/09/2023 23:16

Ok thanks - jeez you'd think they just put the info on the website rather than having to ask!
@Morty12 unfortunately it's a four hour drive, snd her booked sessions aren't until the afternoon.
@Malbecfan it's on October 7th.

There was an option to book car parking when you registered for the open day. It would show up on the e-ticket if you did. It looks to be fully booked now though so if you didn't book when you registered you might need to use a normal carpark.

APurpleSquirrel · 11/09/2023 00:14

Which campus are you visiting?
There are several public car parks close by plus the park & ride - but will depend on the campus you need to be at.

mondaytosunday · 11/09/2023 08:51

Hmmm maybe - I think it must have been fully booked when we registered, though I don't recall that option. Anyway I've emailed them now.
@APurpleSquirrel Streatham. We've actually already been to Falmouth as we had a campus tour with Falmouth University when she was originally going to do a creative degree. As it wasn't an open day we parked on campus there.
I'm thinking maybe near the St David's train station?

Catch a train?

TerribleMouse · 11/09/2023 10:57

I work on the campus and the parking is a nightmare for staff, there simply isn’t enough of it. I would recommend the Devon and Exeter squash club - very close to the campus but not owned by the Uni. If not depending on when you get there, there is on street parking on Prince of Wales road, and the Imperial (Wetherspoons) also has a car park which is a 10 min walk from Streatham.

APurpleSquirrel · 11/09/2023 11:17

You could try Howell Road car park - but of a hike uphill but it's the closest public car park, or as PP says - Imperial Pub?

mondaytosunday · 11/09/2023 12:17

Thanks I'll check those out.
@Moominmammacat the train would cost us over £100 return! Slightly faster, but less convenient. Also after the issues with the trains last weekend causing many to miss the Bristol open day not so reliable!

If you want to avoid parking in Exeter, you could get a train (13 minutes) from Tiverton Parkway (5 minutes off M5) and then walk from St David's station up to campus (15 minutes).

mondaytosunday · 11/09/2023 12:53

The uni has emailed back to say they are running a shuttle bus from the station to the campus. There is parking near there so may book that.

TenSheds · 11/09/2023 13:37

Glad you asked this, have been wondering same. We will probably use P&R; I'm a little worried parking near station may be full or expensive, but will check. We've bussed through all the uni cities we've visited, it's doubed as a way for DD to get an immediate feel for the place.

Madcats · 12/09/2023 08:45

We were caught up in the train fiasco for Bristol (but, as we use that line a lot, we thought to check whether trains were okay an hour or so early). We live nearby so we drove and parked at the Temple Meads station car park and walked round to shuttle buses. We knew XR were planning a protest that day and figured that we could walk back if the demo snarled everything up.

We can't get down to Exeter this time round, but we'd intended to use a station shuttle bus again (it looks as if you can prebook parking at the station if you wanted to drive).

itsmyp4rty · 12/09/2023 09:35

If you go on your eticket, scroll down to 'About the event' click on 'show more' and scroll down there it says,

  • If you have not booked a parking space on campus or at Exeter Science Park you are welcome to park in city centre car parks.
If you click on the link it then takes you to a map of parking which might be helpful.
mondaytosunday · 12/09/2023 21:56

Thanks @itsmyp4rty, my daughter booked it so haven't had access to the booking, but Exeter emailed back with that info. Just Park and Parkopedia indicate that all bookable spots are gone, snd if we're going to have to do Park and Ride might as well just take the train. They have shuttle buses up to the campus from St David's.

gogomoto · 12/09/2023 21:58

Park and ride might be a good option, parking isn't easy
