Hello there wise people
I am trying to help my daughter find the best degree course with both Maths and Sociology. She is in year 13 and predicted A and/ or A* in Maths, Sociology and History. Has further maths AS at an A. So grades look good but need to find the right course for her.
She loves maths but often feels not confident in her abilities despite acing it in terms of grades. Sociology was a new subject at A level but also loves that too. We have seen lots of maths and philosophy courses but she is not interested in these. Any suggestions would be gratefully received.
Thank you.

What about Sociology with Quantitative Methods at one of the unis with a QStep centre.

I only know the Scottish ones (Glasgow and Edinburgh). My DD does + QM with another subject close to Sociology. Compulsory Maths for Social Science and Stats in the early years so you feel confident then between one third and one half QM modules. Plus some of the QStep unis guarantee a summer placement.

What about a BSc (rather than a BA) economics degree?

Seeing your post, I instantly thought of the Mathematical Sciences course at U of Southampton (AAB with A in Mathematics). This course allows up to 25% in non-maths units and, within that, certain formal minor options (inc Sociology) so your DC could graduate with 'BSc Mathematics Science with a minor in Sociology'.

U of Southampton is a very good uni that tends to get overlooked on these MN threads with the tendancy to focus on the likes of Bristol, Bath and Exeter. The maths dept has good links to the social science depts and an emphasis on stats to support that link.

As an added bonus, the uni has sufficient accommodation to guarantee that for insurance as well as firm candidates (though check that remains true for 2024 entry), unlike the other unis I have mentioned in this post and causing some angst on other threads at the moment.

Thank you all.😀 lots to look at here and I will be passing all info on.
I really like the Qstep idea and I hope they will too.

Southampton does look interesting. Also practically easy and cheaper to travel to for us than the Scottish universities.

Be aware that U of Southampton has an Open Day this coming Sunday but appreciate that might be too soon (and too hot!) for you and your DC at this stage; I think there are other Open Days later in the autumn, but you will need to check. Hope that helps.

Tomorrow (today, even) is fully booked - next open days are October 7th and 8th.

As Sandy says, you want a quants degree!

Piggywaspushed · 09/09/2023 12:23

Look for unis with Q step centres. Iirc this includes Glasgow, Bath, Sheffield, Manchester amongst others. Easily googled. They specialise in data with social science.

Piggywaspushed · 09/09/2023 12:24

Sorry, keep repeating Sandy!

Snittle · 09/09/2023 12:25

If she wants to do maths but isn’t confident in her ability, make sure she thinks hard about it. I was confident in ability and grades at A Level (although didn’t do FM), but for a huge shock at degree and didn’t enjoy the course at all
until third year when I could do more discrete maths instead of applied/pure modules (although I was joint honours which limited the breadth of maths modules I could take, but I’m not sure I wouldve stuck with it without the second subject). In hindsight I wouldn’t have done mathematics despite getting full marks in some A Level modules.

VioletladyGrantham · 09/09/2023 12:25

Golsmiths or LSE?

dylexicdementor11 · 11/09/2023 22:36

University of Sussex!

PinkGrapefruitSorbet · 12/09/2023 18:11

Might be worth considering Economics and Sociology as a combo, as that is likely to be far more popular. Otherwise, look at what subsidiary modules are allowed in single honours degree regulations.
