A level remark outcome

Hi

I thought it worth posting this in case your DC are wondering about a remark. DS was very disappointed with his Politics result, and just couldn't comprehend how he had received such low marks on two papers in particular. He was 5 marks off the next grade boundary. We sought a remark of all the papers. In total he was awarded 15 extra marks (6 in one paper, 9 in another).

I realise we are fortunate to be able to afford this review. It does make you wonder about the consistency of marking as 15 marks difference is considerable.

Oh - just realised I called it a remark rather than review. Although in our case it did turn out to be more similar to a remark!

Oh wow. My ds 3 marks off an expected A star for politics. He was disappointed but got University he wanted so left it...
We haven't seen break down of papers. Excedel...

KefaloniaKid · 25/08/2023 08:46

@DinkyDaisy it was Edexcel (still time to request the papers!)

Oh my goodness!

Would his teacher be able to see paper break down? Unlike history (ocr) just given final mark for politics rather than a paper break down.

KefaloniaKid · 25/08/2023 09:06

@DinkyDaisy we were able to ask the school for the marks breakdown on results day. If you email I'm sure the school could give those to you/your DS. Papers one and three (which went up on review) were both around 10 marks lower than paper 2. Ironically DS thought paper 2 was his weakest of the three so that triggered the review.

Wow that is a hefty chunk of marks! DD is waiting on outcome of a remark. Needs 2 marks for her a level biology aqa. Very scary wait indeed as uni place waiting on this xx

That’s really interesting to hear OP, DC also had their Edexcel Politics re-mark back this week and it went up by a similar double figure increase (from just shy off an A to a couple below A). Unfortunately their first choice wanted AAA and have stuck by their rejection even with such a narrow near miss on the A*. I do think that rejection may have been driven by seeing the AAB rather than AAA on results day and that their availability had moved on in the interim so a bit gutting for DC (more so as politics is their ‘passion’ subject!).
It sounds like there might be a more general issue with this subject/exam board this year? I’d thought it was simply a one-off error. Also makes me think that this is v unfair for those who can’t seek a re-mark because of the cost…

KefaloniaKid · 26/08/2023 14:02

@buggybored that is so interesting and upsetting in equal measure! Unfortunately I suspect you may be correct in thinking this error cost your DC their first choice place. It really is so unfair to candidates who work hard and the marks awarded are simply incorrect.

Anecdotally I have heard that the Edexcel politics grades have been lower than expected this year, not only at my DS's sixth form. Why is this? If the published mark schemes are not what the examiners are looking for then the schools and pupils should be told!

My DS also took Edexcel Politics and had a remark which took her up a grade. Her very experienced teachers seemed confident that they had NEVER had a student receive a lower grade in the actual exam to the one they gained in their mock. Until this year…..

Haralambus · 28/08/2023 10:46

DD not DS 😊

DinkyDaisy · 29/08/2023 07:26

My ds asked his politics teacher for break down of marks. Teacher going to look this week. Ds says deadline for remarks 1st September. Doubt ds will want to do anything as got his university place but cutting it fine if did. He was 3 marks from an A star and final mark probably lowest he has ever had. Obviously don't know if teacher misjudged or exam issue.
I keep pushing for him to ask his fellow politics students what they got but they are only sharing destinations and not marks...

That's such a great outcome from the review. It shows how poorly it was marked in the first place. We're still waiting to hear the outcome of a "priority" AQA review which cost DS his first choice place and was a complete surprise; DS has drawn a line and is happy with his insurance but it would be nice for him to have a final grade that feels a little more reflective of his ability.
