Help deferring uni place

T1111 · 19/08/2023 08:01

DS applied for Uni but was also applying for degree apprenticeships. He has very recently been offered an apprenticeship which he accepted. Yesterday he received better than expected results and was offered his first choice Uni.

He wants to do the apprenticeship but wants to defer his Uni place for a year so that if the apprenticeship doesn’t work out then he can go to Uni next year.

Does anyone know if he can do this? I can’t find anything online about it.

Thank you

It's up to the individual university as to whether they allow deferrals. They should have information on their website about whether the6y allow deferrals and how to request one.

He needs to call the Uni, chat to the Admissions for his course, if they agree to defer then they will amend the offer on UCAS and release his spot for someone else this year.

Obviously don't mention that you are deferring to apply for an apprenticeship. Say you need to work for a year to afford uni.

Then if successful in the apprenticeship, release the 2024 place

They don't have to allow deferral, but you can ask

There is no automatic right to deferral. If the apprenticeship is tied to a Uni it may not be possible to hedge bets.

i think it is tied to another Uni. He will be working and be doing modules with a different Uni.

If he does the apprenticeship then he needs to decline the Uni place and if it doesn’t work out reapply next year. Does this sound right?

DS was in this position 2 years ago. He accepted the uni place on results day and then contacted the uni direct and asked to defer for a year. He was completely honest and explained he was starting a degree apprenticeship but wanted to defer so that, if the apprenticeship didn’t work out, he could go to uni the following year without going through the application process without school support. He absolutely loves his degree apprenticeship and let the uni know he wouldn’t be taking up the place about 4 months later so that he wasn’t holding a place unnecessarily.
Good luck to your DS - degree apprenticeships are great, no debt but very hard work!

He is more likely to be offered a confirmed place if he has the grades - as others will be conditional on results.
