That's it really - late offer and looking for advice on accommodation. Do medicine students live together? Does everyone at QMUL just mix with everyone else. Help. I know nothing. Is it better to live in university housing or private housing. I would like DS to be with other QMUL students - preferably 1st year medicine students.

When my daughter was a medical student there she lived in Floyer House in her first year. All medical and dental students and very close to where lectures take place. I think it’s been refurbished since she was there as it was a bit tatty. I think Dawson House is similar. You get a choice of room size at different price points and they are arranged in flats with a communal kitchen.

Some students live at home, some in the halls mentioned above, some in private halls and some in shared houses or flats. There is a wide age range amongst medics so they use a variety of accommodation. If they are just out of 6th form or budget is a consideration the halls are a good starting point

Hi my DD was in Dawson for her first year. Dawson has a lovely garden with benches, trees and a big lawn- such a lovely location on Charterhouse Square. Floyer is in Whitechapel where most lectures are. The medical library is also by Floyer as well as the social facilities. Dawson has the library at Barts relatively close by together with the Robin Brooks centre for OSCE work. A couple of years ago Barts added a further building somewhere closish to the med school for overflow. All the halls are basic, shared bathrooms and kichens. Floyer is good for tables - the social event on Weds whereas Dawson is a bit of a trek.

Thank you for replies. I suspect with a late offer we might not have a lot of choice. But if we do I think he'll probably prefer Floyer based on location.

He applied to Floyer and Dawson. But was offered Lindop House, which is think is for undergraduates but not medicine. Now what do we do? Find private accommodation? Probably too expensive, but we have to do something.

In my dd's year there were some medics in lindop as Floyer and Dawson were oversubscribed. My DD met them through teaching groups and the many medics societies. Some of the teaching is based at Mile End and plenty of medics live near Mile End after halls of residence and use the Qmul campus facilities (eg library).
disappointing for your ds not to be with the majority of Medics and dentists, but maybe you could check with the accommodation office if other medics are being assigned there this year?

Lindop is dedicated to Medecine & Dentistry undergrads for 2023-2024 so that will work surely??

If he's been offered QMUL accommodation, the most obvious thing would be to accept it, surely? It sounds rather as if you would rather your DS didn't share with QM students at all, if he can't live exclusively with with medical and dental students?

I think it's much nicer to live with people doing a mix of subjects. Years ago, that's what I did and, although I made many medic friends (from accommodation and the course), I still have many non medic friends from those days. It's good for reducing stress levels - much nicer not to be with everyone doing the same exam on the same day for example.

Strix · 23/08/2023 16:42

@HundredMilesAnHour you are right. And obviously better at reading the bold print than I am thank you.

@MarchingFrogs I want him to live with other QMUL medical students. I realise now this s the case and we will of course accept the offer.

Whenever I've been on an accommodation tour (3 DC, lots of open days, although admittedly none for medicine), someone has always asked how X people manage with sharing a kitchen / washing facilities. And the answer has been, without exception, that as the flatmates were on a variety of courses, the variety of timetables meant little or no fighting over showers etc.
