my ds did not get the grades to go to Bath for a economics and politics course. A- econ, B- History ( to be remarked to an A) and C in maths. He did have special circumstances as he got taken ill and in hospital for operation before his exams.

We have managed to get Nottingham through clearing for History and Philosophy, which is not what he really wants to do. Lots of his friends in similar situations. However he is looking into CASS/Bayes business school.

Advice on if that is a good university, I havent heard much about it, I would rather he goes Nottingham or resits and applies next year.

any advice from parents who have hone through a situation like this.

Hi. You need to get over to the Higher Education board. There is an A level results thread running there. Lots of kids going through clearing.

He should do what he thinks best though. At this point you can point out pros and cons, but it is his choice.

If Nottingham isn't really what he wants then I wouldn't recommend him going. It's a long time and a huge expense to be somewhere you don't want to be studying a course that you don't want to do.

I've met heard of CASS, you'll probably get more information on that one in the Higher Education Section.

Resits aren't the end of the world or neither is having a year working and reapplying for next year for a course he really wants.

My DS didn't end up going last year and has worked. He has matured so much over the year and is now very ready to go to Uni and start studying again on a course that he really wants to do.

Definitely best to study what he wants to study first, then consider locations

Bayes (formerly Cass) Business School is part of City, University of London and is definitely its flagship school. It has a solid enough reputation, but wouldn't offer the same campus style experience as Bath or Nottingham.

Royal Holloway, also University of London would offer a similar vibe to Nottingham's campus. Perhaps Reading? Both have Economics and Politics in clearing.

How is he feeling today @S2109?

S2109 · 18/08/2023 12:49

@SiouxsieSiouxStiletto he is down but trying to be strong. The option of resisting is getting clearer. We rang Bayes this morning and they considering him for a foundation course in finance and accounting or if we get the history remark to A then he can do a Bsc course. This is making him feel better. Thank you to all who have replied.

What about PPE at Swansea University? It's always really popular with lots of students.

Spirallingdownwards · 18/08/2023 13:22

If he is wanting to do Economics and Politics what about Lancaster Uni. It has Economics, Politics and IR at ABB but it would definitely worth a call to see what they have to say.

It's a highly ranked business school. As a PP said, it's part of City University, which is part of the University of London.

Bayes is a strong Business School.

The enthusiasm your DS brings to his degree programme is important. If he is strongly positive about Bayes it can be an excellent choice.

DS had a remark last year, which is why he didn't end up going and he did get the mark he wanted after the remark.

In the intervening time though he totally changed his mind about his degree and career path. Something I wasn't expecting as he chosen at age 12.

If he's not 100% committed to a course, I would really recommend taking some time and making sure he gets a course that he's 100% committed to.

If he's considering Accounting and Finance at Bayes, he could skip that foundation year by also looking at Henley Business School (part of University of Reading).
They would be held in roughly equal regard in terms of prestige, but because Henley is outside London the grades required in clearing are lower (BBC).

Skule · 18/08/2023 18:05

City, University of London (home of Bayes) also has International Political Economy in clearing at 120 UCAS points (ABC). In terms of course content, this would be a much closer match to his initial Bath choice.

The benefit of being part of University of London is that he would also get the possibility to take some module at other UoL institutions like LSE, UCL, King's et al and participate in intercollegiate clubs and societies.
