Which degree with AI looming?

DD has just completed first year of architecture degree but I’m seriously concerned about the future of this discipline having just seen ArchitectGPT.

She’s doing really well at it and enjoying it but is going to come out with a huge debt, which doesn’t make sense if there is no employment at the end of it. She could change course but to what? I don’t have any real life sources to discuss this with so I’m interested to hear other views.

On that theory, everything’s out because AI can do any discipline.

Things that require interpersonal contact. Therapist, hairdresser.

Trades - plumbing, electrician, roofer etc.

AI may be able to be partially involved but won't take over the manual part of the latter jobs and lockdown has shown us just how much we need human contact and hairdressers!

Cloud/ AWS/Azure. Automation. There will be plenty tech jobs required to build and maintain this 'AI'

Hamster Studies. In order to survive AI we need to be to AI what hamsters are to us. Think about it. They are pointless and dumb and we have to pay to feed them but we keep them alive because we think they’re cute.

Let her persue architecture. It’s an amazing discipline. AI might be able to tell you what size bricks and beams you need but architecture is based on inspiration.
it’s going to be a long time before people just accept a AI inspired design before a human signs it off

HaveYouHeardOfARoadAtlas · 21/07/2023 23:30

If she’s doing well and enjoys it she should continue for sure. Dd has just finished her degree. She’s so passionate about architecture I can’t imagine her doing anything else.

TizerorFizz · 22/07/2023 15:53

@CBAMumma No job, no debt at all. I assume you understand the loan rules. Architecture is poorly paid for many anyway. She’s not going to be paying off her loan very quickly whatever she does.

On a brighter note, human flair might always have value. So get into anything where human interaction is necessary and repetition is not valued.

Amboseli · 22/07/2023 16:02

If she really enjoys the architecture degree she should continue. But DH works with a lot of architects and they're very poorly paid and most of them want to do something else. She is wise to be thinking about other paths outside of architecture.

I read this as Hamster Studios. A bit like the Truman Show for furry rodents. Either way, I'm with you,

TizerorFizz · 22/07/2023 22:51

@CBAMumma Yes. What could she change to? If she likes what she is doing, stick with it. It’s a long slog to get chartered but the key is to get work you like.

CBAMumma · 23/07/2023 00:04

Good to hear different views on this. It’s not a profession I know at all (and I was a bit surprised to see it’s poorly paid). As she doesn’t have a clear alternative and she does enjoy architecture, I expect she will continue.
I suppose if AI really does impact this sector she’ll just have to transfer her skills to something else along the way.
It’s hard to imagine the extent of AI and what real effects it will have.

Yes it’s surprising it doesn’t seem better paid when it’s 7 years of uni/training to qualify.

Kazzyhoward · 23/07/2023 08:07

Any STEM really if she's got good enough grades for architecture as demand will remain high for sciences, tech, engineering, programming and maths as AI needs people to design, build, maintain and update etc.

Other than that, go down the medical route as people will always need medical treatments, even if AI starts to support - you still need people.

TizerorFizz · 23/07/2023 12:58

@Kazzyhoward Shes already started architecture so changing into some stem areas that might require different A levels might be challenging.
