Anyone with DC at Glasgow?

DD is very keen on reading psychology at Glasgow. I wondered if anyone had DC there and how they found it (whether for psychology or otherwise)? She's especially keen on the fact that she can study other subjects alongside in Y1 and 2.

Any thoughts on accommodation would be v welcome as well.

Thank you!

I don’t have DC at Glasgow, but I visit and I am also a former Russell Group admissions tutor.

IMO Glasgow and Lancaster are two of the somewhat hidden gems of British HE. (I used to say this of Bath but it’s now getting the recognition it deserves). In Psychology, Glasgow is 3rd in the UK behind only Cambridge and Bath in the Guardian League Table 2022. Now, people malign the GLT because it leaves out research strength and incorporates the problematic National Student Survey. I agree with these reservations. But Glasgow Psychology, Psychiatry and Neuroscience (which was the unit of assessment used) ranked 10th in the UK in the 2021 Research Assessment Framework or REF, the latest. Combined, these rankings present a very strong picture.

I am in STEM so I have never interacted with Psychology students, but overall the students seem happy and the place has a nice, friendly vibe. Also, Glasgow is a fabulous city and the university is in a good area.

I know plenty of my friends DC that have gone to Glasgow - not for Psychology but a wide range of subjects. All have done well and enjoyed their time there.

My youngest DC is looking for 2024 entry and Glasgow would be their first choice, Edinburgh definitely not first or even insurance.

Accommodation for first year in halls works well - as long as they (Glasgow) don't over subscribe. Private rentals after first year are trickier and students need to start looking quite early - be prepared to take over the summer between first and second year.

I did my undergraduate at Glasgow (graduated early 2000s). In first year I studied psychology as my 'third subject'. I didn't take it any further than first year so can't comment on the degree as a whole but I do know that it was a well respected psychology course as it had more neuroscience and stats content than that offered at many other unis at that time. May be different now of course. Glasgow as a uni has a lot of strengths - great sports facilities, fantastic setting in West End of Glasgow, large central library.....

DS knows someone who's just finished first year Psychology at Glasgow. She's had a brilliant time, loves the city and says the teaching and course has exceeded her expectations. Like your DD, she was attracted by the wider base/ 4 year course and thinks she made the right call. No problems with accommodation. She got into halls in first year and has a flat share sorted for second.

Meant to add, but lots of non-Scottish students are put off by cost as Undergrad degrees are a 4 year course. Glasgow waive the 4th year fees, so that helps a lot.
