University Place

Hi everyone

So my daughter has a conditional place at a University doing her dream course. This was dependent on her obtaining an HNC with an A in the graded unit.

She has been told by her college tutor that she has achieved a B in her graded unit.

Where does she go from here? I'm assuming that she will be rejected now that she has not met the criteria. She has already submitted a portfolio which contained her really high standard of work.

Do universities sometimes offer places through clearing with lower conditions? Or will she need to try a completely different university or course now?

We really don't know where to go from here.

She doesn't want to move away from home, she has ADHD and needs support.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

She needs to contact the university, they may still accept her with the lower grade or they may withdraw the place.

All is not lost, they sometimes do accept lower grades

You should be able to find out if the course has gone into clearing before on previous years. She could join 'the student room' perhaps.

Is uni admissions still open? Can she ask there?

Usually if a Dc fails to get A level grades, they probably don’t get in. But not always. However there are exceptions. They do know her and the course might not be full. Therefore bums on seats then applies. You might not know how it stacks up until A level results are out. Unis usually over offer so it might not yet be possible to decide anything. So maybe hang on for a bit?

OP I imagine you don't want to say which uni (as it is close to your home) or perhaps which course. But let's say it was economics at LSE - vv popular - unlikely that there would be any leeway on grades. OTOH if it was English at Leicester (I'm not calling that uni, DD did that course there) - yes they may well accept a lower grade. DD actually got in through clearing and her prospectus offer would have been ABB IIRC but she had a clearing offer with BCC.

I would say it is worth a call to ask tbh. But it really does depend what uni and what course. If it is a less popular uni and a less popular course then it will most likely be fine.

OP mentions a portfolio; if it's an art/design course there is fairly often flexibility around grades, but it's worth contacting the uni!

The school should be able to give advice on the way forward - the chances of her being accepted, which universities to contact in clearing etc

Thanks for all the advice. She sent confirmation of her grade to the University today and a few hours later she had a notification from UCAS saying her application has been updated. When she logged in, her place has been confirmed. 😁 She's delighted that she's still been accepted and she's excited to get started.
