Occupational Health Check for Nursing

Cats345 · 17/07/2023 10:35

I am (hopefully) going back to finish my nursing in September.

I am currently awaiting my Occupational Health review outcome. However, I am slightly anxious that I am going to be rejected to going back because of issues with Mental Health in the past.

My MH is so much better and it doesn't effect me in work.

Has anyone been through this process? Is it likely that everything will be okay?

Wasn't a problem for me getting through occ health checks for another allied health profession with a history of depression and anxiety - and also through occ health checks to start work with a diagnosis of autism into the mix as well.

One student on our course had a placement offer pulled when they disclosed past MH problems a week or so into placement - but uni found them another placement and they graduated and are working successfully (and knowing the individual I suspect they really made a huge thing out of it - they're a bit dramatic)

Nursing academic here. We regularly support students with both past and current mental health issues to progress on nursing programmes. Sometimes adjustments are required to support students both in placement and university.

Lived experience often makes people more empathetic to those they care for so can be an advantage in nursing.

Thank you for the reassurance, hopefully I will hear from them soon.

The more insight you have into your own condition, the less worrying this would be.

Lots of health care professionals have had mental health difficulties. If you manage your own health, can recognise your trigger points and seek help when needed, there shouldn't be an issue
