DD is in year 10 and considering to go into medicine.

Can anyone recommend fiction or non-fiction with interesting medical stories, ideas, dilemmas, ethical issues, modern day medical profession or simply just a good page turner?

TIA!

Some medical books my DC read before applying to medical school but they were a bit older (probably Year 12) when they read them so discretion required as some aspects quite powerful (death, terminal illness, palliative care etc.) but they are all excellent books and address the big issues around ethics, vocation, personal toll etc.

Dear Life (Rachel Clarke)
War Doctor (David Nott)
When Breath Becomes Air (Paul Kanalithi)
Do No Harm (Henry Marsh)

So you think you want a career in medicine?

(Think that's the title - anyway, I have it and happy to send lol)

DD read The Language of Kindness: a nurse’s story by Christie Wilson which gave an interesting perspective.

Watch the TV series Dopesick. Absolutely thought provoking.

This thread is interesting from the omission of a certain book, which I'm sure was nearly everyone's hot pick a few years back. Possibly since then, folk have seen the TV adaptation and heard / read a few interviews with the author and revised their views on how much they would like him to influence their DC's medical practice?

Thank you, that's a good start. I know which book you mean @MarchingFrogs and agree.

@EwwSprouts is it based on a true story? Looks good. Where can I watch it?

Yes, I forgot that one. It is a wonderful book.

Yes, it's a fictionalised version of a true story and court cases rumble on. I watched it with DS a couple of years ago, so he would have been year 12, and he was just stunned. On Amazon or Disney+ (don't have Netflix).

A Fortunate Woman by Polly Morland

Piggywaspushed · 08/07/2023 09:48

Sleeping Beauties _ Suzanne O'Sullivan
Unwell Women - Elinor Cleghorn

in addition to the above. Both fascinating.

DD really enjoyed "NeuroTribes: The Legacy of Autism and How to Think Smarter About People Who Think Differently" by Steve Silberman, and then had it set read it as part of one of her early placements. She is dyslexic so got quite a lot our of reading about neuro diversity.
