Joining in! DS now knows he's going (Mary's), and very excited.
Does anyone know for sure about moving in day yet? We have a long drive, and hotels are booking up fast.
I guess booking something for the Saturday night makes sense either way, whether it's Sat or Sun...

KittyMcKitty · 17/08/2023 12:30

@usedtobeboss3 moving in seems to be either the 23rd or 24th - we tentatively booked a hotel for the Sat night a while ago fearing they’d all be booked up as the Sat would work for either day.

Congratulations to your ds. What subject is he going to study?

usedtobeboss3 · 17/08/2023 12:34

Thanks @KittyMcKitty - I thought as much. There are some rooms available still, so I'd better get a move on!
He's doing Modern Languages.

Trumporange · 17/08/2023 12:38

Ds is in too!

KittyMcKitty · 17/08/2023 12:42

@Trumporange fantatic! Which subject?

Trumporange · 17/08/2023 12:54

Modern languages too. (We chatted in private messages about the open day but I name changed!)

usedtobeboss3 · 17/08/2023 12:56

Ah yes @Trumporange - hello!

KittyMcKitty · 17/08/2023 13:25

Such an exciting time for our dc - dd was convinced she wouldn’t get in after 1 Biology paper she felt was a disaster- funnily enough she got the exact same mark for that paper as she did for paper 2 which she felt went really well! I’m so thrilled for dd - she exceeded her predicted grades - I don’t think any of us thought an A in Chemistry was possible 😂

Trumporange · 17/08/2023 13:39

We have got a hotel booked for Saturday and Sunday of drop-off weekend but I might not need the Sunday, if so, nearer the time, I'll post about it on here as I'd cancel the Sunday and then it would be available again.

MFLDurhamMum · 17/08/2023 13:43

Name changed!

DD didn't make her offer but she's so happy that Durham have let her in regardless!

@KittyMcKitty I've followed your thread, DD also needed an A in OCR biology (her nemesis) and she got a B. Well done to your DD, she must be ecstatic.

Just need to find out if they'll change her college allocation now.

KittyMcKitty · 17/08/2023 13:56

Aaah I’m sorry your dd missed the A @MFLDurhamMum but great that she was accepted. I think I must have bored everyone to death with DD’s Durham application- I’m so sorry 😂 - but at least it’s a story with a happy ending 😊

My son has just graduated from Durham and was in Mary's. How exciting, I'm sure he will have a great time there!

Paddleboarder · 17/08/2023 14:05

@usedtobeboss3 Hotels are a bit of a nightmare though and they increase the prices during moving in week, also during graduations! My advice, which we did for graduation when we didn't know the exact day, is to book for when you think it will be (and then separate bookings for possible other days) at Premier Inn using the Flex rates, pay on arrival. Then cancel if not necessary. On my son's arrival day there was no accommodation left in Durham, we had to stay outside it.

usedtobeboss3 · 17/08/2023 14:09

I was at Mary's too @Paddleboarder - many years ago! It wasn't his first choice, but he's happy enough with it.
Yes, I wish I'd thought to do the Premier Inn thing - I guess I didn't want to jinx it! It's not a disaster if we have to stay a few miles out, and there still seem to be rooms available.

@Era, best of luck to your DS.

I hope his clearing application is accepted by Durham.

MargaretThursday · 17/08/2023 16:54

Well done all your dc! Dd finished at Durham last year and had a wonderful time, especially in her final year when she was active in the theatre society (tech theatre again!)

If your dc has missed their offer, but been accepted anyway, they may get an email saying their college allocation may change. Dd got this, and was absolutely devastated. However they seem to send it out to all students who have missed, and in real terms, very few are moved.
She had a Whasapp group from those who had done the offer day at her college, and lots got the email, but none were moved.
She got a welcome to your college pack the next day by snail mail, so they must have already known she was staying when they sent the email. However at the time she thought it was a "you're almost certainly going to have a different college" email.

Just thought I'd throw that in for any dc in the same position dd was.

I stayed here for graduation as hotels in Durham were ridiculous. The accom was brand new and a lot cheaper than town. There is a local bus but not sure how late it runs or it’s easy to drive down to the park and ride or taxi. https://www.theblackhorseinntudhoe.co.uk/

Pub | The Black Horse Inn & Pitman's Grill Restaurant | Spennymoor

Well done to everyone who's got in to Durham. My DD 'graduated' this summer and loved her time there. She was in johns.
We've stayed at Farnley Towers hotel whenever we've been up. They do family rooms and a great breakfast and are so friendly and are about 15mins walk from the centre. There's a fab Indian located in the hotel basement.

EwwSprouts · 17/08/2023 19:36

Super to hear all the happy news. Congratulations to the young people. Can't help with hotels as we can get there and back in day. DS was in a hill college and there was plenty of parking available on the day he was allocated.

Hi all,

Congrats for Durham offers and what courses did everyone get ….

Saw Modern languages and Archaeology and Class Civ any others?

Durham was in clearing for a few courses which I’ve never seen before ….

If you have any college questions just shout ….

sometimes people are moved around at the last minute college wise so wait for confirmation.

You have to book rooms so early ….
we didn’t book as it was tempting fate last year but ended up in an Airbnb 3-4 miles out - lovely place though.

DD has loved her first year !

LaDeeDa123 · 17/08/2023 19:51

Which courses were in clearing? Congratulations everyone by the way.

KittyMcKitty · 17/08/2023 20:06

Thanks @Fruitygal - we are keeping fingers crossed that she keeps her college allocation. Dd is going to study Sociology with an intention to specialise in violence against women / feminism. I know MN is anti Sociology and she has a less traditional background having done A levels in Biology, Chemistry and Psychology but it is what she is passionate about and life is too short to spend 3 years studying something you don’t want to. The Sociology Dept were amazing talking with her T the Open Day and Offer Holders day about her A levels etc. Todays all been a bit of a whirlwind particularly as she was convinced her A levels had gone terribly and we had a long list of clearing options to call. Thankfully whilst she may be very good at many things it turns out that she is absolutely rubbish at predicting how exams went 😂. Which college is your dd at?

Fruitygal · 17/08/2023 20:17

Hi @KittyMcKitty DD loves to cook and didn’t want to share a bedroom and wanted gowned formals so chose John Snow - got en-suite and a bunch of great friends - she’s over in viaduct next year so dreading the long walk back to biological science labs
