Where did they go and what they are doing now? Did they enjoy it? I'd be grateful to hear as dd is thinking about it. Currently doing PE, RS and Psychology A levels and working at AAB currently. Thanks!

My son is hopefully doing one in September, results depending obviously. It’s all he has wanted to do for the last 4 years so I hope it lives up to his expectations. He really wanted Loughborough but they want A star, A A and he is predicted 3 A’s. He’s accepted Birmingham.

I know a lovely young man who did a Sports Science degree, got a 2:1 and works in a bar 6 evenings a week. He also does waiting at catered events at Edgbaston. He just can't find work with his Sports degree. He still has to pay his student loan back too.

TizerorFizz · 29/05/2023 14:42

@caringcarer Must be a well paid bar person then! If he’s earning under £27,600 for current student loans he won’t pay 1p. Like most degrees, you have to work at getting a grad job. Many sports jobs are not well paid though.

Surely a Sport science degree, especially from a good uni, is worth the same as any other degree? Unless you are going into something that needs a specific degree.

I know two people with this degree from good universities. One is in the police, one works in finance/call centre. What does he envisage doing with it?

Thepleasureofyourcompany · 29/05/2023 15:48

He doesn't know! His cousin did the same degree and works in tech now, helping to design and produce prostheses for disabled athletes and my friends dd who did a sports degree is a physiotherapist but neither appeals to him!

My son did a Sports and Exercise Science degree and now earns a salary that will bring out MN vipers to say I am lying! He works in IT and Fintech Recruitment.

Parker231 · 29/05/2023 15:53

One of DS’s friends did this degree. He’s now in the Navy. Went to Officer training.

outofmydepth2 · 29/05/2023 15:56

My son did this really enjoyed the course now doing masters in physiotherapy.
His friends from his course which finished last year are doing a variety of masters degrees, sport coaching/strength and conditioning coaching, personal trainer and sports scientist with a premiership football club

Relative got a First from Loughborough in Sports Science. Now has an excellent public sector job, v v well paid, bought own flat in her mid 20s. Just not working in sports! But she did a degree in a subject she enjoyed, which kept her motivated, so well worth it.

EwwSprouts · 29/05/2023 17:05

DN did sports science at Southampton. Went on to do PGCE and became a primary school teacher. He loves it and has been promoted a couple of times.

Merha · 29/05/2023 17:48

Thepleasureofyourcompany · 29/05/2023 18:05

One is now a Physiotherapist
One a Senior Lecturer at Uni
One Research Associate on a Physiology / Govt Project
Another local gov Health Promotion

Sports performance analysis seems to be a popular /little known area lots of placements (and then jobs after a Masters) available for e.g Rugby / Football teams.

Have to be able to cope with Stats / Lab Science ect .

BASEs accreditation is the industry standard.

@Thepleasureofyourcompany There are jobs, but not necessarily where you can afford to live at 21. In a city there are options if you live there. If you live in the rural areas, it’s far more of an issue.

It is a degree that most do because they want to work in sport. However we now have loads of these degrees and grads need to consider very carefully what they will lead to. Posts cite Loughborough. That’s not the same as lower ranking universities. If there are loads of jobs for every sports scientist, that is great, but stats do not bear this out. Of course a few do well, however, many take fairly low paid jobs in gyms. Few get to work for Prem clubs. It’s important to be realistic and pragmatic and look at careers where the degree might be useful. If DC are dead against branching out, that’s the road to bar work.

Not all degrees are equal. I’m assuming you would not rank sports science equivalent to maths at Cambridge or engineering at Imperial.

What a silly post.

Not many degrees are equivalent to Maths at Cambridge, and contrary to Mumsnet wisdom, most students don't go to Oxbridge and manage to have fulfilling lives.

I did English Literature and that's even less useful than Sports Science. Publishing or teaching, both thankless and badly paid.

Not sure how you know so much about the lives and jobs of sports graduates, but obviously if you just want to have a pop at them and point out it's not as prestigious as engineering at imperial (no shit sherlock) then do go ahead.

DH did. Him and all the cohort I've met are teachers with exception of one who is in the police.

TizerorFizz · 29/05/2023 23:57

@Thepleasureofyourcompany It was you who said sports science is worth the same as any other degree from a good university! It plainly is not. For some it is. It’s utterly dependent on what you compare it with. Yes, English is pretty near the bottom for grad prospects. Medicine and Economics near the top.

It is very possible to have a great fulfilling life if you can get a great job and pay the bills! Or mum and dad pay the bills! Lots of lower paid jobs do not allow grads to move on from “student” life because they cannot afford to. Being broke is not fun or fulfilling. If earning lower salaries was great, I guess we would not have teachers and health staff striking. Turns out they need the money to live a fulfilling life. I would be wary of rose tinted glasses.

My best friend did this in Birmingham, now she's a sports therapist/physio and very well respected in the football circles. She's been all over the world looking after under 14s with the FA as well as having her own private clinic.

Fullofpudding · 30/05/2023 00:13

2 people I know who have this degree. 1 went into teaching PE as couldn't find anything suitable job wise and the other works in McDonald's.

I know someone who did it who is an athletics coach… caveat there she competed for GB in her sport.
Another I know works in sales.
