Anyone a Personal Trainer or Fitness Instuctor?

Having been a sahm for the past 8 years, I am now looking to retrain. Having discovered the joy of exercise over the last couple of years, I would love to work in this field. Apart from exercising for my own benefit, I have no experience of working in this field, and would be starting from scratch. Would love some advice on how to get into this field of work - qualifications, experience needed etc.

I am 33 this year by the way. Am I too old?? I guess by the time I've obtained qualifications I will be heading into late thirties. Ultimately I would love to work for myself, as a personal trainer with a small number of clients ( I'd need to work around children )

My sister is personal trainer and I don't think her course lasted much longer than a year (2 at the absolute most)

She works for herself and had no previous experience in a gym before hand.

Your ONLY 33 go for it

My friend recently trained to be a personal trainer and sports therapist and did an intensive 3 month course. Not sure how feasible this would be for you as you have children, other responsibilities (my friend is single and childless) but worth considering if you want to qualify sooner rather than later.

thanks everyone. Just found out my local college does NVQ's in Exercise and Fitness, so that might be a good place to start.

DCA Home Learning do distance learning courses that enable you to become a Fitness Instructor through home study. There's more info at www.dcalearn.co.uk

hi Celery, I am currently training to be a personal trainer. I chose to do the YMCA qualification. Last year I did Level 2 Fitness instructor which is a 14 week course (I did the one day intensive course but it was also run as a two day course). I am now doing the Level 3 Advanced Fitness Instuctor and Personal Trainer as a single 22 week course although it can also be done in individual modules. This is 2 days per week and is fairly full on. It's classed as a full time course because although I only spend 16 hours per week in the college gym/classroom there is so much work to do away from the college (studying and case study work etc).

Because of my age (42) and my experience I was able to go in at Level 2 but I don't know what the exact criteria are.
If you would like to speak about it in more detail feel free to CAT me.
