Which universities have been very disrupted (strike action)?

Or have they all been equally affected?

Hi, you might need to be more specific. Are you referring to past strike action or the current marking boycott?
In any case around here it varies/d very much by department, and everywhere you will find that the STEM subjects are less likely to be on strike, while the social sciences shut down wholesale. The impact of the MAB won't be known for a few weeks yet, when the actual marking is supposed to happen.

My uni hasn't been affected at all in social sciences.

ChangedToday · 14/05/2023 09:04

@SocialLite totally agree. It's all very locally specific. One of our STEM departments is badly affected, not because of the markers but the professional staff refusing to process the marks...

SOWK · 14/05/2023 09:13

Also, the impact of the marking and assessment boycott isn’t known yet - it will only be fully clear after exams at the point when the markers are due to return mark sheets.

The last year and current action.
anecdotes fine.
On other threads posters are reporting variable experiences, some very poor. But the universities and courses are often not named.

Is this to pick a uni for current year 12s or just out of curiosity?

Either way, I'm not sure what knowing this info does to help matters.

DSs at Lincoln and Birmingham have had a few cancelled seminars. But that doesn't mean other students haven't been more affected at the same institutions.

We have to hope that for all concerned a satisfactory resolution is reached soon.

YarnySocksKnitter · 14/05/2023 11:49

Ds at Exeter, STEM, 14-16 contact hours a week, only 1 tutorial cancelled in the whole strike period, recently had marked assessment back. Not expecting any significant delay to exam results.

Longtimenewsee · 14/05/2023 12:44

Depends on course at Durham. Dd (stem) not affected this year and only mildly affected last year. Friends on other courses have been affected more though

BurbageBrook · 14/05/2023 19:51

It's not going to be helpful info if you're looking to avoid the worst affected unis for your DCs. For example, at my uni the humanities especially the social sciences are badly affected, sciences/Maths/engineering etc far less so.

Whiskers4 · 15/05/2023 11:03

The problem is we don't know what the future holds. If you're asking as your DC might be considering certain unis and a factor, the might be worth asking about those specific unis and which areas are affected.

DD is on a humanities course at Edinburgh and has had lectures cancelled and affected by the marking boycott. The uni are considering their options, but can't confirm to her (she's asked high up) that her dissertation and final essays will be marked.

DisquietintheRanks · 06/07/2023 16:36

@Whiskers4 what ever? That's terrible.

HaveYouHeardOfARoadAtlas · 06/07/2023 16:41

You might need to give an idea of course/department……..so some courses at a particular uni may have been badly affected while different course at same uni totally unaffected.

PandaPacer · 06/07/2023 17:20

My DD at UEA has said all UG students will graduate with a classified degree this year, so not much impact there from the marking boycott from the sounds?

aibutohavethisusername · 06/07/2023 17:29

DD at UCL did not get het classification today. She has to wait a few more weeks. NOT a STEM subject.

aibutohavethisusername · 06/07/2023 17:29

Did not get

Knackeredhamster · 06/07/2023 17:33

Cardiff University

Absolute shit show.

DC just finished 3rd year.

Had high hopes for this uni. I wouldn't recommend it.

Offspring thankfully got her results and classification today.
Humanities.

Another of her friends got no classification.

Boulshired · 06/07/2023 17:43

Humanities at DS university has been hit harder than other areas especially psychology and social sciences. His subject is predominantly taught by those who were in the industry prior, who are less likely to be in the union and are older and more financially secure.

ifonly4 · 06/07/2023 18:43

My DD has studied at Edinburgh and in pretty much in a similar position as a poster above. Less contact that other unis and lectures cancelled due to strike action. She's graduating next week with a 'letter of completion'. She understood they'd be giving them assessed marks, which could only be improved on if work marked, but obviously not happening.

She's gutted, but still wants to make the most of the graduation as she doesn't want to be robbed of that experience. Four years studying for a scottish masters and an unclassified degree, very sad.

Students seem to be upset with both sides, uni and union.

HighlandCowbag · 06/07/2023 18:49

Im dual honours, English and Philosophy. English barely affected last semester, Philosophy lectures and seminars cancelled strike weeks and no essays marked and not sure about exams yet. Results published tomorrow for vast majority of students apparently, I suspect Philosophy exams in the minority. Philosophy is a very militant department.

Dd at Durham doing History, still waiting for feedback and marks from earlier exams and assessments.

Same for Brighton.

BiancaBlank · 06/07/2023 23:25

DD just completed first year of law at Warwick. Their exams are not being marked atm, though the latest communique from the university suggested they would be at some point. In the meantime, everyone just progresses into second year. Obviously this is more of an issue for students in their final year.

None of her friends on other courses have been affected.
