10 weeks between finals and starting work

If your dc had 10 weeks between their last university exam and starting a very high pressured and well paid job (50k starting), what would you suggest they do? The issue is, that your dc is broke and has no money to travel.

Work for 4 weeks (bar work or whatever) travel for 4 weeks on credit card, sort self out for work and new life for a couple of weeks.

Or find a volunteering position with free accommodation, such as guarding nesting turtles on a Greek beach, put flight on credit card.

EggInANest · 09/05/2023 18:45

If I had the money to lend them for flights I would do, given upcoming salary.

Saffronn · 09/05/2023 18:46

I’m normally debt-averse, but in this situation I’d use a credit card for an amazing (cheap) trip before real life kicks in.

I got married. 😉

I would too, in a heartbeat. The new employer is going to want their pound of flesh for that sort of money; there might never be a spare three weeks, let alone ten, to have fun again. It's as much as my husband earns after 25 years in his (public sector) job!!!

SeasonFinale · 09/05/2023 18:49

What is your own financial situation? I would probably suggest they work half the break and pay for a trip for the second half as a graduation present (because I could which is why I ask about your own situation).

FlickyCrumble · 09/05/2023 18:51

Travel. Once you step on that ladder you don't want to come off.

Motheranddaughter · 09/05/2023 18:51

I would give them some money to travel

FinalCowdown · 09/05/2023 18:53

I will have 16 weeks and I’m getting a puppy but wouldn’t recommend that of course! Just relax I imagine

FinalCowdown · 09/05/2023 18:53

As long as they have saved to afford their rent I think time to decompress would be good

Madcats · 09/05/2023 18:57

I have a very hazy recollection that my old employer gave an advance to new grads about to join.

Do banks still offer graduation loans?

LizziesTwin · 09/05/2023 19:36

Dd has lined up work & is then travelling. Has worked throughout the last 3 yrs and is ready to spend!

ofteninaspin · 09/05/2023 21:07

DS leaves uni first week in July and starts grad job first week in September. He is travelling for five weeks (funded by earnings from summer internships) and coming home for a couple of weeks.

marniemae · 09/05/2023 21:13

What job is 50k starting salary straight from graduation??

LizziesTwin · 09/05/2023 21:30

@marniemae Grad engineering scheme, management consultancy, cyber security grad scheme off the top of my head.

50k absolute starting salary for any of those would be v high! I do believe OP just curious as it is very rare for first graduate job to start that high

Well done to your DC! Some good ideas here around volunteering and working then holiday combos.

gymwars · 10/05/2023 07:27

Sign up with a temping agency or get a bar job that pays weekly, save everything for six weeks then go on holiday for a month.
